Janet K. (Hall) Shaffer

Janet K. (Hall) Shaffer, was born on November, 24 1939, in Salamanca, New York. She grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan, graduating from Battle Creek Central High School and then Battle Creek Community College (now Kellogg Community College) with highest honors. Janet continued her education in Albion, Michigan at Albion College majoring in English and education with a minor in history, Spanish, and music. She graduated in 1961 with the prestigious academic honor of Phi Beta Kappa. While at Albion College, she was an avid vocalist in the college choir, blessing many with her beautiful voice.

After college, Janet taught high school English in Grand Rapids and Marshall, Michigan before relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she remained the rest of her life.

Janet was a member of St. Albans and Trinity Episcopal Churches where she shared her beautiful voice for many years in both church choirs, as well as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chorus. Janet was also a gifted writer and a published award-winning poet.

Janet's only child, Scott Andrew Shaffer was born on August 20, 1971 and was the greatest love of her life. While still a young child, Scott was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. With Janet's love and care, Scott outlived his doctors' expectations before passing on January 20, 1997 in his mid-twenties. For the duration of Scott's life, Janet was a dutiful mother who stood by Scott's side as his condition slowly consumed his body, but never his mind or soul.

Janet is survived by many dear friends and a few, very much loved, family members. Most notably, Amy, who Janet introduced to many as "the mother of my grands," is married to Janet's nephew Brian. Janet loved and doted on her beloved "grands" (Brian and Amy's three children) from afar as her "grands" live in Wisconsin.

A Celebration of Life Service for Janet will be held on May 30, 2026, at 11:00 am with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior at Trinity Episcopal Church, 611 West Berry Street, Fort Wayne, followed by the burial of her ashes next to her son at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne.
