Obituary of Joan Kathleen Whiting
Joan Kathleen Whiting, age 86, passed away peacefully on the evening of March 20, 2019. Joan was born April 27, 1932 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to John and Velma Hagan who preceded her in death. Joan attended St John the Baptist School, was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and Marymount College. A lifelong resident of Fort Wayne, she was active in the community with the Junior League of Fort Wayne, the Festival of Trees, the Gingerbread Festival, The Fort Wayne Ballet Board and the History Center Board. Her focus on staying committed to her community instilled in her children a passion for the arts and volunteering. She was the strength of the Whiting family and was fiercely protective of her children and grandchildren who knew her as Mimi. Mimi loved to take vacations with her family and enjoyed baking for everyone. She loved games of all sorts especially cards. She loved to talk politics and current affairs and was an avid reader. She also would love to reminisce about her friends from the neighborhood growing up near St. John the Baptist Church. Joan was a devout Catholic and instilled the faith into her family as she was friends with many priests and nuns. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Jack Hagan. She is survived by her children Kent Whiting (Natalie), Jeff Whiting (Maureen), Mace Whiting, Jason Whiting (Michelle), and Kara Squires (Rick). Mimi’s surviving grandchildren are Samantha Stanford, Audrey Whiting, Colleen Whiting, Kelsey Whiting, Libby Whiting, John Whiting, Caleb Dutcher, Savannah Squires, Katherine Whiting, Jack Whiting, and Annelise Whiting as well as numerous nephews and nieces including Chris Nagel with whom Joan was especially close.
