Obituary of Joel Dwight Alwine
Joel Dwight Alwine, 93, passed away January 29, 2023, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, IN. His funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Joseph United Methodist Church, 6004 Reed Road, Fort Wayne, IN. Visitation will precede the service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Highland Park Cemetery. Joel was born December 31, 1929, in Elkhart, IN, the son of Russell William and Marget Ellen Alwine. He graduated from Elkhart High School and earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Tri State University in 1958. As a veteran of the US Navy, Joel served during the Korean War from 1950-1954. On April 7, 1957, he married Bernadette (Jarvis) Alwine. They raised 2 sons and 4 daughters. Joel worked as a Civil Engineer Consultant in South Bend, IN for three years, and 16 years as an Advertising Manager with NIBCO Inc., Elkhart, IN. In 1977 he moved his family to MN, where he owned a Snelling & Snelling Personnel franchise for three years in Edina and spent five years as an engineer with Donaldson Company in Bloomington, MN. Joel retired in 1998 after 13 years with ITT Aerospace & Communications in Ft. Wayne, IN. His memberships included St. Joseph United Methodist Church, Fort Wayne Art Guild, and the American Legion Post 47. Joel had a wide array of interests including drawing and painting, interior design, landscaping, refinishing period chairs, and he enjoyed museums, history, and hiking. He was a devoted man of faith and was active in his church up until the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bernadette (Jarvis) Alwine of Fort Wayne, IN; sons Joel M. (Jane) Alwine of Burnsville, MN; Thomas R. of Washington, MO; daughters, Peggy L. (Brian) Prieshoff of Goshen, IN; Nancy E. (Heath) Fervida of Elkhart, IN; Jane M. (James) Fabian of Auburn, IN. He has 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and a son-in-law, Steve Weigt of Alamogordo, NM. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Weigt, October 21, 2020, siblings, Raymond, Charles, Shirley Ann Burton and Alrene Carboneau.
