He was intelligent, well read, athletic, generous, loving and philanthropic. John was active at both Taylor Chapel and Good Shepherd Methodist churches.
John was born on October 25, 1945 in Mishawaka, Ind., to Vera and Dale Lovell. He was a graduate of Mishawaka High School and in 1965 received a B.S. degree in Psychology from Purdue University.
After serving two years in the United States Army, John returned to Purdue, obtaining a M.S. and a Ph.D in Industrial Psychology. In 1971, John accepted a position with Lincoln Life Insurance Company and moved to Fort Wayne. He eventually started his own business, Individual and Organizational Behavior, which later became National Assessment Services. He assisted corporations all over the United States in selecting the appropriate candidate for a particular position. He also helped them in developing a positive workplace culture. Local clients included Do It Best, Steel Dynamics, Fort Wayne Metals, Brooks Construction, Pressed Seal and Wagner-Meinerding. John also enjoyed career counselling where he assisted high schoolers in choosing appropriate career paths.
John served on the board of directors of both local and national organizations. Of those experiences, the most fulfilling was the 12 years that he served on the board of The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission.
He was an enthusiastic tennis player and with long-time doubles partner Joe Voors, won a number of local tournaments. In his sixties, John became an avid cyclist. Along with friends Russ Suever, Ken Miller and his brother Bob, John rode from coast to coast. In addition to many weeklong trips in the Midwest, John and Bob rode to every Big Ten stadium (when there were ten!) to watch his beloved Boilermakers play football. BOILER UP!
John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Jeri Dael Lovell, Matthew John Lovell, Jami Lyn (Matt) Gibson, Sean Treesh and their mothers Linda and Gina, and grandchildren Parker, Bennett and Edison. He is also survived by his brother Bob (Carolyn).
In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to contribute to the American Cancer Society, The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission or to the charity of their choice honoring John.
