John William Schmitt

John W. Schmitt—beloved husband, father, family member, and friend -passed away on July 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 8, 1947, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, John lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to his family, and a passion for the things he loved most. On July 30, 1966, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Johnson, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Together they shared a life built on commitment, laughter, and countless cherished memories over nearly six decades.

John dedicated more than 30 years of his career to GTE before continuing his work for nearly another decade with Centennial Wireless. His strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability earned the respect of everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Outside of work, John embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid sports fan whose heart belonged to Indiana University, but he particularly enjoyed all collegiate basketball—especially during the NCAA tourney. He also faithfully cheered on the Indianapolis Colts, the Chicago Cubs, the Indiana Fever, and most recently, the USA team in the FIFA World Cup. Whether he was watching from home or discussing a game with family and friends, sports were one of his greatest joys.

John also loved spending time fishing, golfing, and bowling. But one of his favorite pastimes was gambling with Marilyn at an area casino or traveling to Las Vegas, where they enjoyed countless memorable trips together.

Above all else, John treasured his family, including many years of dogs and, more recently, the three cats that he and Marilyn rescued. He will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, penchant for details, and sense of humor.

John is survived by his children, John C. Schmitt of Saybrook, IL, Melody Schmitt-Foreman (Keith) of Stuart, FL, and Jimmy Schmitt of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren, Brandi Sears (John) of Bloomington, IN, Ben Schmitt (Jennifer) of Pendleton, IN, Cole Foreman of Stuart, FL, Kayla Foreman of Stuart, FL, and Parker Schmitt of Fort Wayne, IN; great-grandchildren, James, Johnathan and Joschua Sears and Cooper Schmitt; and a brother, Dave Schmitt.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his parents, Roy and Helen Schmitt; and brothers Don, Roy, Ken, and Ed Schmitt.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until time of service.

John will be laid to rest in Catholic Cemetery.
