

John D. VandenBerg, 99, passed away August 20, 2026, at Cedarhurst Assisted Living in Fort Wayne, IN. He was a native and lifetime resident of Fort Wayne, IN, born on January 25, 1927. He graduated from North Side High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University. John was a WWII Navy Veteran. As a young man he worked for McComb and Sons Funeral home in the 1940s as an ambulance driver. John retired in 1989 as Supervisor of the Electrical and Electronics laboratories after 37 years at Navistar Technical Center in Fort Wayne.
John was a longtime Chicago bears fan as well as both Purdue basketball and football fan. He was known as the dad and grandpa that could fix anything. He had many hobbies including gardening, fishing, camping, ham radio and a love of music.
John is survived by his daughters, Susan (Greg) Fields of South Whitley, IN; Laura (Jerry Keller) Ryan of Churubusco, IN, son, Jack (Angie) VandenBerg of New Haven, IN 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Donna F. VandenBerg, April 25, 2012, parents, John C. and Henrietta VandenBerg and a sister Virginia “Ginny” VandenBerg.
Private services were held. Memorials to Heart-to-Heart Hospice. Arrangements by D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home 1140 Lake Ave. Fort Wayne IN.
