John W. Wearly

John W. Wearly, 93, of Fort Wayne passed away Monday, June 8, 2015. He was born on March 12, 1922 in Huntington to the late Prentice L. and Velma (Lackey) Wearly. He was a retired educator, graduating from Huntington H.S. in 1940. He received a BS degree in 1948 and a MA degree in 1956 from Ball State University. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Fort Wayne. Other memberships include Amity Lodge F & AM 483, 32 Degree Scottish Rites, Mizpah Shrine, Hospital Unit, Shrine Circus, and past Commander of Legion of Honor. A past president of the Allen County Retired Educators Association, past president of the Southwest Allen County Teachers Association for two years, past president and secretary of the Washington township Lions Club Local Education Fund, past president and secretary of the Golden Kiwanis. Boy Scout Field Ex. of BSA, Anthony Council three years camp director of Camp Big Island, and District Sales Manager at Majestic Company for two years. He taught at Roanoke for two years, Angola H.S. for 12 years, Northwood Jr. H.S. for two years, and Homestead H.S. for 17 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Europe as a Sgt., in the 99th Infantry Divisions participating in the Battle of the Bulge, Remagen Bridge Head, Ruhr Pocket and Southern Germany. He was a genealogist, stamp collector, world traveler, and woodworker. Surviving family include his daughters, Anne (Ken) Wearly-Roller, and Jill Jellicoe; three granddaughters, three great grandsons, and one great grandson, Braden; sister, Doris Hille; and four nieces. Besides his parents, he was preceded in passing by his wife, Mary (Krick) Wearly; and son, Dr. David W. Wearly. A funeral service will be 11:00 am on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be from 5-7 pm on Friday, June 12, 2015 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to donor’s choice.
