Judith Joann (Hicks) Frey, age 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 18 surrounded by her loving family.

Judy was born April 1, 1938 in Fort Wayne, IN to parents George Edward (Ted) Hicks and Doris Marie (Parnham) Hicks. She was a graduate of South Side High School and met the love of her life, Jim Frey, in the summer of 1956 at the Orchard Ridge Country Club pool, where he was working as a lifeguard. After Judy attended Indiana University and joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, she and Jim were married on August 29, 1959 while Jim was a student at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. They returned to Fort Wayne in 1962 when Jim established his dental practice and they began raising their family.

In addition to being a loving, caring mother to her three children, Judy was active in a number of community organizations, including the Junior League, the Fort Wayne Ballet, President of the Alliance of the Isaac Knapp District Dental Society, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, the President of the Alliance of the Indiana Dental Association, and the Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic. She and Jim were recognized with the Matthew 25 “Fabric of the Community” Award in 2014 for their service to the clinic.

Judy never missed any activity her kids participated in, from sporting events to performances to ceremonies. She was a loyal IU Hoosier fan and enjoyed attending football and basketball games, including several Final Fours. She loved spending time and hosting family and friends at Clear Lake and visiting the beaches of Hilton Head Island and Chix Beach, VA.

Judy is survived by Jim, her adoring husband of over 60 years, daughter Catherine (Joseph A. Christoff) and sons David (Gail) and Tim (Terri). She is also survived by her sister Jan (Frank) Schollett, grandchildren Mitchell and Natalie Christoff, and grandchildren Justin, Amanda, Jared, Peyton, Meredith, Nate and Mason Frey. There are also numerous nieces and nephews that Judy loved dearly that survive her. Judy was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her younger brother William E. (Bill) Hicks and her grand dog Jazz.

The family will receive callers and visitors at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, on Friday, January 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 611 West Berry Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46802.

To the Frey family, our deepest sympathies. She was a fantastic wife, mother, grandmother and above all, a great person. Jim was my dentist, fellow referee, and played basketball against each other in grade school.

Our families met in the summer of 1979. My older brother Jeff and the Frey's son Dave were playing on the same baseball team. Little did we know that Jeff and Dave would become lifelong friends playing on many great baseball and basketball teams together. The Frey's younger son, Tim, and I would also become lifelong friends playing on some not so great baseball and basketball teams! Ha!
I will always remember Dr. and Mrs. Frey being at every game and being great parents. Not only to their own children, but to me and others as well. I'm 52 now and have come to believe that of all the different titles we may have in life, there is no greater title then Parent/Mom/Dad and Mrs. Frey, from my vantage point you were a great one and you will forever be in my heart!
I thank you for the memories and your kindness!
Love,
James "Boomer" Rickard

I will always remember our many walks and talks on the beach of Hilton Head Island. We would talk about everything from food we were fixing for dinner that evening to the men in my life and many, many other things. She was such a joy to be around and a blessing to me. When I see a shell or a sand dollar, I will think of her and how she loved to find them on the beach. I will miss her dearly and the fun times we had.
