Louis was born in Georgetown, Guyana to Hugh “Manny” Adolphus Rogers and Virginia “Sweetheart” McPhoy. He learned early to value time and hard work.
He began as a motor mechanic in Guyana and earned a strong reputation for precision. He later worked as a welder mechanic with the Thompson-O'Neal Shrimp Company and Wieting Richter Limited. In 1969, he moved to the United States and continued his trade as a welder. He became a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local Union No. 5. He trained at Aviation Evening Trade School in Long Island City, New York and earned certification in Inert Gas Welding Practices.
He lived by simple rules. Be on time. Do the job right. Speak plainly. If something did not make sense, he would say, “You must be drinking.” He took pride in his appearance and carried himself with confidence.
He also valued routine and friendship. He enjoyed meeting his union friends for breakfast. Those mornings gave him steady connection, good conversation, and a sense of community.
Family shaped his life. He married Mignon “Lyns” Rowena Rollins in July 1954 and had two daughters, Yvette Rogers DeFreitas and Denise “Debbie” Rogers. He later had two children, Louis Rogers Jr. and Lorraine Runda Rogers, with Clothilda Solomon. On May 18, 1968, he married Eudel Jacqueline Cambridge. They welcomed their daughter, Sharon Rogers-Hinds.
He was a man of faith. He was baptized at Cambria Heights Community Church in Queens, New York. In September 2023, he recommitted his life to Christ at First Assembly of God Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolphus “Manny” Rogers and Virginia “Sweetheart” McPhoy, his sisters Ilene Rogers Harry and Sheila Hazel, several aunts and uncles, his grandchildren Danae DeFreitas, Shaniece Rogers, and Nigel Rogers, his nieces and nephews Hubert, Patricia, and Ethlyn Harry, and his brothers-in-law George Harry and Kenneth Hazel.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 7PM at Cambria Heights Community Church 11602 220th St, Cambria Heights, New York 11411.
