Maricela, better known as “Marti,” to those who loved her, was a precious, loving, and selfless soul that touched the lives and hearts of her family and friends in ways they will cherish and be forever grateful for. Marti began her early life in the mid 1960’s, living in the small town of San Luis Obispo, California with her mother, step-father, and younger sister. Upon moving to Oceano California, Marti loved spending time with horses, and swimming at the beaches of Pismo Beach, Lopez Lake, and Morrow Bay. In 1970 Marti’s family moved once more to Southern California, growing up in the areas of South San Diego and Imperial Beach. She loved walking on the pier, and the smell of the salt air. Another of Marti’s favorite places was La Jolla Coves, where she enjoyed diving off the cliffs and basking in the sun. Here in San Diego, Marti raised her son Jake. In 1997 Marti moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana and married the love of her life, Earl Coons. They had a loving marriage and created many memories for her to look back on and cherish. Marti became a strong matriarchal force in the lives of her family. Marti loved spending time with her granddaughter Ashly. She was a lifeline in times of distress, and a comforting rock of security, just knowing she was there when things were good. Marti was an avid reader, reading books upon books in short periods of time. She loved pottery making and embraced her heritage and Mexican culture.
In 2019, Marti went on to further her education graduating from a Phlebotomy Technical Program and becoming a Phlebotomist at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During this same year Marti was met with one of her greatest life’s challenges. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought it hard enduring much sickness, chemotherapy and radiation for two long years . In 2021, Marti became cancer free and with one victory came yet another tragedy, that same year. Her husband Earl passed away. In 2022 Marti once more faced and grieved the passing of her mother-in-law Eleanor. In October of 2023, Marti, sadly, was to go on what would be her final family trip, to Sedona, Arizona. On December 27, Marti passed from our lives into the peaceful light of the Divine with her loving family surrounding her.
At this time there will be no scheduled funeral service, as Marti’s wish was to be cremated. At some point there may be a memorial service for her passing, and at that time, notices will be available for time and place, for those that wish to impart their condolences, and honor and celebrate her life and memory.
