Marilyn graduated from Goshen High School in 1965. She went on to earn an associate’s degree in paralegal studies from Trident Tech and a bachelor’s degree in social work from Liberty University—preparing herself for a life devoted to serving and advocating for others.
Throughout her career, Marilyn’s work reflected a clear purpose: to stand beside people who needed support and to make a positive difference in their lives. She served for many years as a professional guardian, bringing steadfast advocacy and care to those she represented. She also contributed as a substitute teacher, volunteered with community organizations including the YMCA and Carriage House, and opened her life and home as a caregiver to many foster children over the years.
To friends and loved ones, Marilyn was fondly known as a spunky woman who knew how to have a good time. She loved to talk, to socialize, and to laugh, and she had a rare gift for saying exactly what she meant.
Marilyn found joy in puzzles, music, baking, and crochet, and she delighted in sharing those interests—encouraging others to join her and learn alongside her. She was also a loyal Notre Dame fan, cheering them on for many years. Marilyn gave herself freely to others, and she enjoyed being relied upon by those she loved.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Stacie Lassiter, Ashley Lassiter, Candi Coker, Christopher Lassiter, and Michael Waits; her grandchildren, Myles and Maddoc; and her close friend, Pam Markin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marcus and Kathryne (Judy) Copeland; her brothers, Gordon Copeland and Ronald Copeland; and her close friend, Ronnie Lassiter.
A memorial will service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at First Presbyterian Church, 300 W Wayne St, Fort Wayne, IN 46802, where her ashes will also be laid to rest.
