I remember getting together at Grandma and Grandpa’s house for every holiday, with the whole family. All the kids would play in the basement, pool, shuffleboard, machine guns, board games, and most memorable for me was drawling on her brown couch in the basement. Not drawling with crayons or pens, we could actually draw on it with our fingers and then wipe the fabric the other way and have a fresh canvas. When the food was ready Grandma would stomp on the floor so all of us down below knew it was time to eat. We would all rush up and wash our hands, which brings me to another memory… Grandma’s small bathroom by the garage door would always smelled like soap, it was so fresh as if there was always somebody showering, I loved that smell. After we would eat and clean up, we would go back to playing, gift opening, play a fierce game of Euchre, or make Rock Candy. Rock Candy would only happen after Thanksgiving. If you don’t know this process basically Grandma would cook sugar to a certain temperature, poor it on a cookie sheet covered with powder sugar, and then wait until it was the right consistence to cut into long strips, then it was thrown into the middle of the table with another pile of powder sugar for all of us to grab and start snipping into little squares. It was quit the site to see our entire family around the table with scissors in our hands snipping away, laughing, talking, and making wonderful memories. Also the last flavor I think was always Cinnamon, so Grandmas house would smell like Cinnamon for a really long time.



In Moms/Grandma later in life, we have treasured menories of being traveling companions.
We were blessed with being willing and able to go on trips like Napa Valley, CA a couple of times, Northern CA & Mesa,AZ several times, and to Southern Indiana and Libertyville, Illinois for High School Gradulation Partys for her Great Grandchilderns.  
Glad we had special and joyous times as we traveled and staying the weeks and weekends with her in our travels!
She had a way of keeping Diane on her toes even in her final days, by giving her "the Stink eye look".
Love that she knew how to put a smile on Dianes face in that moment, and it will live in her with loving thoughts. 
Mom had a special spirit of gracefullness and joy in most everything she did. 
She knew how to give the "The Look to keep us Kids in-line" and in her later years she use the "Pointer finger wiggle" and a beautiful smile to keep them on their toes.

Glad you are in peace now Mom and by Dad in Heaven.  
You are missed but will Live in our Heart and Soul forever!

(Great) Aunt Marion was such a wonderful woman. She brought light into any room she entered. We were blessed to have her with us for so long. The last time I was able to see her I asked her if she remembered who I was, she looked at me at with the upmost certainty she said, “Of course I do, Dora Jean!”  I said that was pretty close but mom would love the compliment of looking so young. We both laughed and talked about the good old days... We are not able to be there in person today today but will be viewing online. Love, prayers and hugs to all family and friends. There were always cookies in the cookie jars and she was always  smiling as she worked in the kitchen. I was mesmerized by her look of contentment as she worked in the kitchen. Grandma was always up for a good party and ready to entertain. She loved us so much. All that love and peace  came from Jesus. By far the biggest memory is that she read her Bible every morning.  Every morning. Without fail. Thank you Grandma for living your life for Christ and showing His love to everyone!

Marion Steffen

My memory of Marion Steffen began in the late 1960’s. She and my mother sang in the choir at Waynedale United Methodist Church. I remember her as the tall soprano with the beautiful voice. I didn’t know the rest of her family until 1974 after I met her son on a blind date arranged by mutual friends. After a few dates,Terry took me to his house to introduce me to his family - his mom, dad, and three sisters. Being an only child, I was totally overwhelmed when everyone began talking to me at the same time. They were loud and funny and made me feel so comfortable. Marion, from that day forward, took me in like I was one of them. I never felt out of place. 

A funny memory I have is when the whole family was together for holidays or Sunday dinner and she would say “let’s get a family picture”. I quickly found out that only mom, dad, sisters and Terry were to be included. Myself and the sisters’ husbands (later known as the outlaws) had to sit it out. 

Family was so important to Marion. She always had Sunday dinner for whomever could come and the house was always filled with children and laughter and most of all love.

I remember weekends at the trailer on Lake Gage - skiing, volleyball and playing Spoons where you learned to be a survivor or get your fingers ripped off. Making Christmas cookies and special rock candy. Birthday parties, baptisms, holidays or just dropping in to say hi. 

Marion loved her family and always had a baby in her arms, a bible on the table and a big smile on her face. Nothing ever phased her. Cooking, cleaning, feeding babies, good news, sad news. She never complained and made what she did look so effortless. She was a shining example to all of us. 

In her last days, she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren - a tribute to a life well lived. Her faith was always strong, she never wavered and because of that, she knew when it was time and left us peacefully.

I went to Huntertown Methodist Church with Jake and Marion for years. They were so devoted to each other and that always impressed me.  Marion was such a kind lady and always friendly. My deepest sympathy to her family. 

Hula dancing at 4th of July celebrations, pool parties, family photos, brag sessions, sweet and unsweetened tea, shuffle board, empty pop bottles, euchre, ticker pie, rock candy, burnt fingers, blisters from using righty scissors, wooden blocks on tricycles, the smell of a freshly sealed black top, big pile ups, family photos, casserole meals and church choir in gowns.  These are a few of my most fond memories of Grandma Steffen, she was the ultimate hostess and she took care of everything! She was also unbelievably proud of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren and loved to brag on their accomplishments. My Grandma always put us first and always looked for an excuse to get family together and put them to work, weather it was making rock candy by the kilo, cookies by the 10’s of dozens or teaching the younger generation how to have cunning eucher strategies. I was lucky to grow up in church with my grandma and I loved being part of the ministry of music with her, my parents and my sisters. I love that I have fond memories of singing and playing bells together.  My grandma was a special woman, she loved her family and her God deeply.  I feel blessed that she was able to be surrounded by family as she was greeted at Gods pearly gates of heaven.

Marion was such a beautiful soul. I I got the pleasure of meeting her through being one of her caregivers through Visiting Angels. Such a Wounderful lady. R.I.P Marion

Marion was my Sister-in-law  Dora Smith's Aunt. We were at a  get together at my Brother-in-law Stuart's house and his 3 year old  daughter Emilee and I were sitting at one of the tables. Marion came over to sit with us. She looked at Emilee and said "Hello Emilee,  I haven't seen you in a long time."
 Emilee looked up and said  "Yes I know,  I'm thinking it's been at least 10 years." 
I thought Marion was going to fall off her chair laughing so hard.  
She was such a sweet lady that I loved very much.  I will cherish that moment.  
Rest in Peace Marion, Heaven has gained another beautiful angel.

I will always cherish the memories I have doing puzzles with great grandma. I never really enjoyed puzzles but I did with her and all my other cousins, all sitting around the table being crazy little kids. There were always baby pictures of all of us on her fridge and we always laughed at how silly we looked but it showed how much she loved us all. It is because of strong women like her that I have people to look up to and know support and love me.
