On Thursday March 18, 2021 Michael Rice, of Warsaw, passed away at age 55. Michael was born on March 20th, 1965 in Marion, Indiana to Martha (Pulley) Rice and Edward Rice, Sr. A graduate of Marion High School, Michael worked for several banks throughout Northeast Indiana until his retirement, and also started his own programming company, RTSI, Inc.

Although a lover of black coffee, peaceful mornings at the lake, family vacations, and his fur babies Chewbacca and Khaleesi, Michael’s greatest joy was undoubtedly being a father. From coaching his children’s soccer team to serving as a pit dad for their marching band, Michael’s entire world revolved around his children.

Michael could always be found with a camera in hand, preserving time and memories for others. Never one that enjoyed being in the spotlight, Michael’s love of photography captured his essence—his selflessness, attention, heart, love for others, and his ability to make everyone feel seen and loved. Michael was a natural handyman and jack-of-all-trades, always trying to better the lives of everyone he encountered. He frequently snowblowed all the driveways in his neighborhood in the winter, and always insisted on treating family and friends to a meal. It is no doubt the world is better because of Michael, and that we are better off for knowing him. He would want us to remember that Love Never Dies.

Michael is survived by his children, Mark Rice and Michaela Rice, his ex-wife and dear friend Melissa (Mark) Rice, and his mother Martha (Pulley) Rice. He is survived by siblings Edward Rice, Jr., Jim and Linda Rice, Carol and John Copeland, Ginny Rice, Patti and Murray Boland, and Brenda Rice, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Rice, Sr., his brother, Tim Rice, and his sister-in-law Belle Rice.

The family will hold a private celebration of life on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Greenlawn Funeral Home in Fort Wayne. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of Michael. I just found out today.

He was my boss for a number of years, but more importantly, he was my friend. I worked with him at Systematics, Norwest Bank, Wells Fargo, and Tower Bank. He gave me the opportunity to learn about the hardware and software area of I.T. when so many companies only wanted someone who had experience. He took the time to mentor me. For this, I will always be grateful to him.

This has already been a difficult week, with the passing of my mother, but I feel very blessed to have had these two people in my life. My life has been much richer for it.

Rest In Peace, my dear friend. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. Thank you again for everything.

Mike and my son Jim grew up together as Mike lived 1/2 mile down the road. They and two other friends were together a lot. Mike was always polite and supportive when Jim passed. My love to Melissa and the children. He will be missed.

I’ve been best friends with Michaela since 4th grade, and anytime I’ve ever been around her dad he was nothing but but kind and selfless, always making sure we were having fun, accepting nothing in return. My senior year he insisted on taking Michaela and I’s semi pictures professionally for free before the dance and he did an incredible job, my favorite pictures from a school dance by far! He wasn’t at dinner yet even managed to get us free deserts through a friend that night!

To the entire Rice Family: So sorry to hear about the passing of Michael. I will always remember him stopping by my place on100 South when he was still living at home just to visit and talk. I last seen him at his mom's90th birthday celebration. It was a real treat getting to see all the family together. What a great day that was. What a great guy who always was helping others. I was one of those neighbors whose driveway Michael snow blowed every winter at Chapman Lake. He would never take anything for doing it. Always said hello when walking his dogs by our house..he was a great guy and we'll certainly miss him.
Rest in peace Michael...

Dear Melissa, Mark and Michaela -

My deepest sympathy to you all. I was so sad to hear of Michael's passing. I worked with him at Tower Bank. Actually, I was in Facilities ( a department of 1) and had the pleasure of being located in the IT Department. Michael was so smart and the hardest worker. I remember my home computer broke and he offered to fix it- I drove to his house and he was so great with my son, showing him all the parts and explaining what he was doing. So very kind and thoughtful.

We had a special group at Tower- I will never forget Michael and the team. The best.

Take care yourselves in the days to come.

I was sad to hear of the death of Michael at such a young age. I have known Michael a long time having worked with him at Systematics, Norwest Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Tower Bank, and IAB Financial Bank. He was one of the most intelligent individuals that I have ever met, and at times as my boss he had certainly helped me in my computer operations career. I learned from him, and remember to this day, that it was always important to state things technically correct. I know that he loved his children dearly and talked about them often. My sincere condolences to all of his family.

Condolences to all his friends and especially his family.

Several years ago I worked on a large project with Michael at Tower and got to know him enough to experience his acts of kindness, generosity and unique sense of humor.
