I really didn't personally know Nancy very well, but do know that she was a tremendous supporter of Steve and their family. That's what it takes to have a successful band program like the one at Homestead. I know Steve depended on Nancy for everything and she was there for him.

I am sure that the family, students, faculty, parents and friends will miss Nancy and her many contributions to the band and Homestead High School.

In teaching with Nancy at Indian Meadows Elem., she was such an inspiration. Her music programs were always of such high quality, she always shined in all she did. She was so friendly and kindhearted; her smile lit up the room. The students and teachers alike just loved her. What a blessing she has been and I consider myself so privileged to have known and worked with her. My deepest sympathy to Steve and the family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I accredit a lot of my musical love to the hard work you did, in Elementary school. You were a driving force for both me and my sister Emily all the way through High School band. Saying goodbye to you is like saying goodbye to my mother. I'm sure this is a sentiment shared by many of your "band children." You took such good care of us through all those years. Especially senior year, when things got a little sketchy for us, you never once faltered in your support of us. 

One of my favorite memories was shortly after I joined the Drum Line. I was having trouble fitting in and was not confident in anything I was doing. On the way out of practice during Band Camp, you stopped me and said "You can do this, I believe in you. Don't give up!" I used that mantra to make it through my first year of line, and then "advance" to being the 3rd Bass Drummer for my last two years in band. I was so proud of the accomplishment, but I always remembered that you believed in me. 

You both always said we could contact you for anything. I wish I had kept up on that promise. But know this, I will always carry the love you showed for me, and all band kids, until the end of time. You taught me to be a good person.

All four of my children had the privilege of having Nancy as their music teacher and it is an honor to call her my friend. We will cherish the memories of class musicals (especially those 5th grade productions!), recorder practicing,early morning choir rehearsals,and after school elementary colorguard.  Steve and kids, thank you for sharing your mom and wife with all of us. She leaves behind a big Nancy-shaped hole that will be hard to fill.

Mr. Barber, I am so sorry to hear of Nancy's passing.  It is truly a loss to all of us who were fortunate to have even met her, but I know it cannot compare to the void you must feel in your life and your heart with her gone. Nancy was a wonderful person and mentor.  My thoughts are with Steve and the kids. The world lost a sweet person much much too soon.

I had the pleasure of working with Nancy for over 20 years.  We were not only music teachers together but good friends.  Some of my best memories of Nancy were when all of the elementary music teachers in Southwest would attend IMEA and ORFF conferences together.  We would go to classes during the day and then spend the evenings talking about them, laughing and site seeing.

Nancy was such a giving and fun loving spirit.  Her love for music and her students rubbed off on all of us.  Computers were a challenge to her and e-learning was a trial but she introduced the program Monkey Drum to her students and us.  Every time I use this program from now on, I will always think of you and your wonderful smile.

My path in life was impacted in a positive way from having been a part of the magic that Nancy brought to Henryville many years ago. I am a better person from having known her. Condolences and saying that "I am sorry for your loss" seem a very empty sentiment at your time of deep loss. The Lord provides people in your life when you need them and that was Nancy in my life. As I was reflecting on my years in high school, I was trying to remember one particular memory that stood out to me of Nancy. As I thought, the one prevailing memory was  FAMILY. Nancy and Steve have had a marriage built upon mutual love and mutual respect for each other. The overall principle of family built on love and respect has stayed with me throughout the years, even extending to my own family today. I appreciate that necessary lesson in a time where that does not exist in every situation. Thank you for being an integral part of my life, thank you for sharing something so powerful with me. Our thoughts and prayers will be continually with you as traverse the time ahead of you.

This morning I wept, and weep as I write, for both the world's loss of Nancy and with tears of joy.  Divulging which band I was a member or if I were staff or student is irrelevant because we were all students of the Barber's.  I feel sorrow for the loss of Nancy because she and Steve loved us all through encouragement, discipline, toughness, hard work, high expectation, and most importantly, they believed in us when we did not.  I feel an overwhelming amount of gratitude for the love and memories afforded us all by the Barber's.  I am also filled with joy in knowing that with the love in Nancy's heart for each of us, she will be given a place next to God in Heaven.  Though many of us have never met, never will meet, we all share a common thread.  The Barber's touched our lives and we are part of their family.  Thank you both for the memories and the love.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Nancy's passing. I knew that she had been ill but was hoping she would recuperate.

Anna and Jeremy often spoke of Nancy with fondness and how you always expressed your appreciation and admiration of her to the students. They saw the unique love the two of you shared. I first met Nancy & Steve when my oldest daughter, Stacey signed up for band.  I helped repair marching band uniforms, braid the color guards hair on the way to band competitions and chaperoned the band for eight years.  I also chaperoned the first band trip to Florida.  I rode on Steve and Nancy's bus and got to know them and their children. 
I also came to the surprise 25th year celebration at Homestead with my oldest daugher, Stacey.  I am so glad that I was there to reconnect with band members past and present and the many parents who came.  
May the Lord lift you up on eagles wings and take you home and we will meet again in Paradise.

I was blessed to have had you both as my teachers at Henryville High School in the late 80's.  Going to state at the Hoosier Dome and the Florida trips to march in the Disney parade are memories I will never forget.    You both were great inspirations!  So sorry for your loss,  my love and prayers are sent your way so you may find peace.

My heart is broken and my prayers for the Barbers are many.  Steve and Nancy taught me at HHS.  I also went on to have a personal relationship with them as they trusted me with babysitting their most precious gifts, their children.  I have very fond memories of watching the kids and visiting with Steve & Nancy outside of the school.  They touched my heart in so many ways.  I will never forget the positive impact the Barbers had on the community of Henryville and me personally.  I feel fortunate to have gotten to know Nancy.

I just wanted to let the family know how sorry I am to hear about Nancy's passing. Steve Barber was my high school band director in the 1980s, energetic and enthusiastic, with fresh ideas and big plans for our band program. He was always one of my favorite teachers. I didn't know Nancy as well, but she put all she had into building up the color guard program at Henryville. I will keep the family in my prayers.

It's hard to gather the thought yhat you are gone. You encouraged me to work hard, give it my all, you taught me "can't" is not acceptable.
