Ned Jerome Boylan
September 14, 1934 – December 21, 2023
IN THE CARE OF
D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Covington Knolls
Ned J. Boylan, born September 14, 1934 passed away, on December 21, 2023. He was born and raised in Fort Wayne, IN and was a proud graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1952.
He received a full-ride scholarship to play baseball at Indiana University, but after two weeks at IU he was called home to help his parents when his father had a massive heart attack. Thus began his career with the telephone company, digging ditches to earn money to help support his parents.
On September 26, 1953 he married Patricia Leffers. Together they had 5 children and nearly 55 years of marriage before her death in 2008. Ned is survived by his sons: Chris, Shawn (Kelly), and Greg (Beth); his daughter Carrie Lamb (Joel); his grandsons: David, Ryan, and Edison and his granddaughter Abigail. He was preceded in death by his parents (F. Wade and Antoinette), his brothers (Jack and Dan), his wife, and his son (Tom).
Ned served in the Army during the Korean War but was always quick to point out that he was lucky when his draft card was pulled because the war ended before he could be shipped overseas. A dedicated worker, Ned worked his way up into sales for the phone company, Tokheim, and retired from PPG as a paint engineer. Ned enjoyed coaching his sons in baseball, watching IU basketball, playing golf, musical movies-he was forever singing the theme song to Oklahoma, big band music, eating ice cream or cereal after dinner, and Christmas.
A visitation for Ned will be held Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Covington Knolls, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m, with burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.
