Norma Jean (Pohl) Davies Weissert, 91, passed away in Fort Wayne IN, on June 19, 2025, of complications from Lewy Body Dementia. Norma was born September 25, 1933, in Emporia Kansas, to parents Verna K. (Haake) Pohl and Gustave O. Pohl. She was the third of four children, with older siblings Kenneth and Mary and younger brother Dale. Norma graduated from Emporia High School in 1951 and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) in 1955. While at KSTC, she worked as secretary in the Department of Biology, where she met H. William “Bill” Davies, a student in the department. Norma and Bill were married on May 27, 1956, in Emporia and the two traveled the world together, visiting all 50 U.S. states and over 50 countries, on six continents.
Norma had a long career in education, teaching elementary students in Topeka KS, Chapman KS, Lebo KS, Lansing MI, and in Australia (in Tamworth, New South Wales). After pausing her teaching career to raise three children, she worked as a substitute teacher in kindergarten-high school in Fort Wayne and went to night school to obtain a master’s degree in education at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in 1980. She retired from teaching in 1994.
After retirement, and after her husband Bill passed away, on March 30, 2002, Norma remained engaged in her community, including volunteering at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory and Allen County Public Library (Georgetown). Norma attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for over 50 years and was an active member, assisting with the church preschool, singing with the adult choir, and regularly participating in Bible Study groups.
On April 14, 2020, during the COVID lockdown, Norma married Martin Weissert, of Fort Wayne.
Norma is survived by her husband Martin Weissert; children Diana Davies (Jim Reilly) of Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico; Larina (Joe) Hoffbeck of Portland, Oregon; and Wade (Colleen) Davies of Missoula, Montana; and grandchildren Maren, Madoc, Mallory, Carmen, Thomas, and Gordon.
