OBITUARY

Rebecca Ann Yancey

May 3, 1940July 13, 2021

Rebecca Ann Yancey, 81, former secretary for Elvis Presley, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2021 in the presence of her loving family in Fort Wayne, Indiana after a short illness. Becky was the widow of her beloved husband of 41 years Jerry Yancey and is survived by her only son, Dr. Jerry Yancey, Jr. (Jennifer), dear grandchildren, Joel and John of Fort Wayne, Indiana; only brother, Harold Hartley (Nita) of Cordova, Tennessee; and close cousin, Barbara Brown of Grenada, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hulet and Elizabeth Hartley of Memphis, Tennesse. She was a member of the Whitehaven Class of 1959 in her longtime hometown of Memphis. A young fan and occasional date, she asked Elvis for a job at a Graceland party one night when he told her to return the next day to become his secretary where she was an insider for the next thirteen years until 1975. Her experiences at Graceland were published in an upbeat memoir catapulted to a best seller given Elvis’ untimely death near the time of its release. Her southern charm and professionalism were displayed throughout the country and in London on a grueling several month book tour to include appearances on Good Morning America, 20/20, and To Tell the Truth as well as countless radio, TV, and newspaper interviews in a world hungry for anything related to her former boss. She enjoyed her family, friends, travel, and volunteering with Special Olympics. The love and friendships of the Elvis community sustained her for the last several years and the family wishes to thank them for their prayers and support. Dr. Yancey, I am so sorry about Becky's passing. Your sweet mom and I became friends when she came to Richmond, VA on her book tour. For most of the years that I came to Memphis she and I, and quite often Jerry as well, would have a good time visiting. When she moved to Cordoba we lost touch which saddened me. When I saw on Priscilla's Facebook page that Becky was in the rehab facility, I could not resist calling her. We had a nice conversation that I believe she enjoyed very much because she sounded very excited to hear from me. As soon as I said, "Hey Becky, it's Fran from Richmond, her response was a very happy, "I haven't heard from you in forever." That just thrilled me. However, when I called the second time she was taking a treatment so I told her I would call back in a few days and then she was in the hospital. I am so sorry I waited a couple of days to call back. She was one very special lady and I know you and your family will miss her. God be with you all. Fran Rudock

Thank you for getting to know you ! And thank you for sharing pictures from Graceland through the years you worked there ! And to get to know you was probably ment to be , it turned out you knew Rex Gatlin , who was our bus driver in 2008. As part of Elvis The Magazine and Frode Nielsen Fangroup . While we were in Memphis during Elvis Week . Rex was working for Cline Tours at the moment. You Becky and Rex.. was part of The Class of 59. As you went to school together in Memphis ! You both lived there back then , you were chosen to work for Elvis Aaron Presley and Vernon A. Presley . As one of three of the secretaries ! Thank You for being one of your friends ! While visiting Tupelo during Elvis Week in 2017... my twinbrother Johannes and I , happened to meet Rex again..
at The Birthplace Museum . He was sitting on a bench at the front door , while waiting for a group of fans from Brazil
.. with only woman :-D ! He told us ! The world is small
when you come to Tupelo and Memphis :-) ! Sincerely Andreas Narum , from Kolbu Norway !
