

Richard Charles Notestine, age 74, passed away at Parkview Randalia Hospital in hospice in Ft Wayne, Indiana on Tuesday, August 13th, 2024. Richard was born on November 14th, 1949 in Sturgis, Michigan to Ruth (Preston) Notestine McNabb and Charles Notestine. He had an adventure filled childhood growing up in Mongo, Indiana with two sisters and one brother.
In 1967, Richard graduated from Prairie Heights High School and voluntarily joined the Army to serve in the Vietnam War. He served in the 101st Airborne Division as a Special Forces tracker and was awarded two bronze stars for his bravery in saving a commander under enemy fire. He received the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal Ribbons with V Device Air Medal, which is reserved for special bravery while under enemy fire.
Upon returning from Vietnam, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Debra Weiss, in 1970. He pursued his engineering degree and was awarded a Bachelor of Science at Purdue University, Ft Wayne. They had two daughters, Carmen (Notestine) Shepard and Heather (Notestine) O’Malley, and enjoyed many years supporting them in volleyball, basketball, and many extracurricular events at the Prairie Heights School community.
Richard later worked at Weiss Trucking Company, a family business, and enjoyed various managerial and director roles from 1977-2004. His community and work in Mongo at Weiss were a large part of his life and passion. Volleyball refereeing also became something he contributed to in the community while his girls were active in school. Later, he went onto enjoy golfing, attending Christian concerts, attending Prairie Heights sporting events and being an active member at SonLight Community Church.
He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Notestine, his mother, Ruth Notestine McNabb, sister, Darlene Notestine Jacobs, brother-in-law, Ralph Jacobs, nephew Dalton Jacobs, brother-in-law, Robert Hall and nephew Rodney Hall.
Survivors include, ex-wife, Debra Weiss Notestine, daughter, Carmen (Brad) Shepard daughter Heather (Justin) O’Malley and six grandchildren, Zach Shepard, Austin Shepard, Lauren O’Malley, Ella O’Malley, Luke O’Malley and Jessica O’Malley. Surviving siblings are Diann Hall and Jeff (Denise) McNabb of Mongo, Indiana. Richard was fond of his surviving nieces and nephews.
Family and close friends of Richards are invited to attend a Celebration of Life event at SonLight Community church this Friday, August 16th. Doors open at 10:45 AM, and the celebration will begin at 11 AM. The address is 455 N Gerald Lett Avenue, Angola, IN 46703
