Robert Ervin Eugene McAfee

Robert Ervin Eugene McAfee was born in Poe, Indiana on March 17, 1925 and passed away peacefully in his home with his family on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. He leaves behind his wife, June; his son, Steven (Ani); three granddaughters - Jennifer, Sarah, and Lisa; two living grandsons - Shawn, and Justin (Miranda); two sisters - Audrey and MaryLynn; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. His brother, Dewight, and grandson, Elisha, preceded him in death. He also leaves a circle of friends and neighbors who, along with his family, will miss his presence in this world. Bob served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from December 1944 through June 1945, with the rank of 1st Lieutenant as a P-38 pilot in the 23rd photo recon squadron of the 3rd group of the 12th Air Force, based near Florence, Italy. He was discharged with honor and distinguished service in June of 1946. Upon his return from WWII, Bob married Gloria June Weaver, who became his wife on June 7, 1947. After his military service ended, Bob attended and graduated from Tri-State college with a B.A. in aeronautical engineering, before taking a job as an automotive engineer with International Harvester Co., serving most of his thirty years there as a Chief Engineer in the Design division. For a number of years, he served as a Master in the Masons and as President of the Poe Volunteer Fire Dept. He also was Chairman of the S.A.E. (“Society of Automotive Engineers”). At the time of his passing, Bob and June were married 71 years, the longest married couple married residing in Indiana, at the time. A memorial service will be held at D. O. McComb’s (4017 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46815) on Saturday, September 1, 11:00 a.m., with an “open house” visitation immediately following the service at Steven and Ani’s residence until 4:00.
