Roy Wieland was born in Bay City, Michigan, on July 7, 1923, and passed away in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on October 18, at the age of 98. In 1949, Dad married Margaret Lydia Fluckiger, of Ellington, Connecticut. After 58 years together, Mom passed away in 2006.
Together, Mom & Dad raised four sons, Bradley R (Vera Grusy) Wieland and Brace T (Brenda Ringger) Wieland, both of Grabill, Indiana, Blaine L (Cathy LaLonde) Wieland of Leo, Indiana, and Blair W (Michelle Broquard) Wieland of Charlevoix, Michigan. So far, Roy & Margaret also have 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren: Traever (Jen) Wieland, Bay and Jacey; Jaret (Sharlin) Wieland, Aviah, Smith, Faye, Pierce; Troy (Chalise), Penn, Fern; Brady (Jen), Cole, Jersey, Dex; Brinn (Dustin) Maust, Max, Moses, Levi; Daisha (Stu) Reynolds, Creed, Trek, Navy; Casey (Aaron) Stoll, Canon, Sally, Murphy, Barrett; Brett (Heather) Wieland, Carter, Grey; Devin (Emily) Wieland, Henrik, Ira, Soren; Carly (Ryan) Miller, Judah, Leo, Minnie; Dash (Sally) Wieland; Tucker (Taryn) Wieland, Brennan Wieland; Bo Wieland; Seven Wieland.
If it’s a little unusual to name all 15 grandchildren and all 29 great-grandchildren, let's just say that’s the way Mom would have wanted it, and we’re so proud of every one of them. Two of Dad’s brothers, Jim (Arlene Feller) & Cliff (Carol Broquard), passed away before him. He is survived by his brother, Darlye (Edie Klotzle) who lives in Midland, Michigan. Though Dad’s memory wasn’t very good in his last few years, he could still tell us stories of growing up at 701 N. Erie Street in Bay City, Michigan, with his brothers, and going around the corner to Henry Wackerle’s grocery store. He could still name the neighbors on the corners of their block, and he never lost his wit and humor.
Dad was very influenced by his father’s entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic, and our family’s history in the furniture industry loomed large for Dad. He was still showing up for work well into his nineties, still inventing processes and designs that live on. If Mom was the heart of our family, the one who taught us that no one needed to be a stranger, that all people were valuable and should be treated with compassion and kindness, then Dad taught us to have confidence and to act on our beliefs, to trust our intuitions, whether they were popular or not. Our lives will never be the same with both of them away, but so many wonderful memories will persist until we see them again.
We will be having a private, immediate-family-only service. Please don’t send flowers, but if you’d like, please send donations to Lifesong (https://give.lifesong.org/lifesong/india), an organization that Dad & Mom liked and supported for many years.
After the service, Dad will be laid to rest with Mom at Concordia Cemetery Gardens, Fort Wayne.
