Sharon Ruth Metzger

Mrs. Sharon Ruth Metzger, 89, formerly of Tucson, AZ and Fort Wayne, IN, passed away July 5, 2025, at her home in McCordsville, IN. She was born on March 2, 1936, in Fort Wayne, IN, the daughter of H. Murray and Ruth E. (Bell) Petty.

Sharon graduated from South Side High School in 1954, earned her Registered Nursing diploma from Parkview School of Nursing in 1957, and completed her associate’s degree in Supervision at IPFW in 1987.

Sharon started her nursing career at Parkview Hospital in 1958 and was working in Parkview’s emergency room when she met her husband Jack who was working as an ambulance driver for D.O McComb & Sons while he attended Indiana Institute of Technology.

Sharon dedicated herself to caregiving and later returned to being a home-maker - supporting her husband and two young children. As her children entered junior high school, Sharon returned to the workforce as the Camping Services Director for the Limberlost Girl Scout Council, a position she held for 13 years. In this role Sharon was able to tend to both Camp Agnes McMillen and the magical Camp Ella J Logan, with great respect and dedication. Throughout the years and seasons, she could often be found hiking through the woods with her cherished Dalmatian Camelot (Cami).

Sharon returned to the medical profession for 7.5 years as an extended care nursing director and as a school nurse at her granddaughter’s St. John the Baptist Catholic School, before retiring to Tucson, Arizona in 2002. After several wonderful years making new friends and enjoying the desert climate, Sharon and Jack returned to Indiana in 2007. Her sister Kathie, and son John and his family also moved closer to daughter Susan and her family in the Indianapolis area.

Sharon was a charter member of the Eastern Star Waynedale Chapter and a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed gardening, sailing, and spending time vacationing in Maine. She loved to sew and was an avid and gifted quilter.

Sharon is survived by her daughter Susan C Miles of Indianapolis, IN; son, John S Metzger of Noblesville, IN; beloved sister and care-giver Kathleen M Petty of McCordsville, IN; brother, Steven M Petty of Monroe, MI; granddaughters Mary (Kurt) Theurer; Hope (Josh) Drake; Julia (Marc) Kemen; Sharon LM Metzger; grandsons Jack-Danel Metzger and Na’il M Metzger; great granddaughters Annabeth, Ellarose, and Juliana Kemen and Nora Theurer; great grandsons Abraham and Hank Theurer; and extended family members, Bouyo Aldiouma Metzger and her daughter Aysettu Serata Sow.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, John F. “Jack” Metzger, who passed on November 10, 2013.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, July 14, 2025, at D.O. McComb and Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN, with visitation one hour prior. Committal and Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to Girls Scouts of America, or Riley Hospital for Children.
