Shelby Jean Heist

Shelby Jean Heist, nee Bryant, age 83, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 27, 2026. She was born on June 30, 1943, in Somerset, PA, to Howard John Bryant and Ada Catherine Nelson.

On October 13, 1962, Shelby married James Roger Heist at Listie Brethren Church, marking the beginning of a loving marriage that spanned more than six decades. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service to others.

Shelby is survived by her devoted husband, James Roger Heist of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and her son, James (Angela) Heist, also of Fort Wayne. She was a cherished grandmother to her grandchildren: Sara Heist of Manaus, Brazil; Jacob (Amber) Heist of Portage, Michigan; Samuel Heist of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Anna Heist, fiancée of Damian Kenney, of Adrian, Michigan; Abigail Heist of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Joel Heist of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Malachi Heist of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Benjamin Heist of Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Elijah Nelson, who brought her great joy.

Shelby was preceded in death by her parents, Howard John Bryant and Ada Catherine Nelson, as well as her beloved daughter, Lisa Jo Heist.

For many years, Shelby was a faithful attender of Byron Center Bible Church in Byron Center, Michigan. Her life was marked by a quiet, steady faith and a gentle spirit that reflected her love for the Lord. She especially enjoyed gardening and tending her flowers, finding peace and satisfaction in the beauty of God’s creation.

A memorial service celebrating Shelby’s life will be held at Byron Center Bible Church in Byron Center, Michigan, at a future date to be determined.
