Stacey Juwan Kelsaw was born on May 14, 1971, to Paul E. and Mary E. Kelsaw. The youngest of four boys, Stacey grew up with a love for sports that would remain an important part of his life. During his early years, he participated in football, baseball, and wrestling, developing the competitive spirit, dedication, and passion that would later influence his career as a coach and mentor.
Stacey graduated from Northrop High School in 1989 and continued his education at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. There, he played football and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1994. During his college years, Stacey married his childhood sweetheart, Stacy Browning, on September 7, 1991. Their loving union was blessed with two sons, Juwan and Jeremiah, who became an important part of his life's greatest joys.
Following his graduation from Taylor University, Stacey began his career with Fort Wayne Community Schools, where he served in numerous positions throughout the years. Holland Elementary held a special place in his heart, reflecting his deep commitment to students and the school community. At the time of his passing, he was employed at Homestead High School.
Stacey's impact extended far beyond the classroom. He was a familiar and respected presence in the Fort Wayne community, dedicating his time and talents to working with young people through sports, education, and ministry. His love for God was reflected in his service as a Sunday School teacher at Pilgrim Baptist Church and co-leader of New Cove Children's Ministries. He also shared his passion for coaching by working with T-ball, Wildcat Baseball, and basketball at the YMCA, as well as serving as an assistant coach at South Side High School. In addition, he worked as a driver's education instructor and drove for Crossroads Courier. Through these roles, Stacey shared his knowledge, encouraged young people, nurtured their faith, and built meaningful connections with those around him.
Outside of work, Stacey found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed listening to old-school hip-hop, watching his beloved Dallas Cowboys, and spending precious time with his grandchildren. Summer cruises with Alanna and Ty Ford were especially memorable, as they traveled together collecting refrigerator magnets from the places they visited. A Cherry Pepsi was often a favorite companion along the way. At home, Stacey could often be found enjoying the company of his beloved pet, Huey.
Stacey also demonstrated a generous spirit through his acts of kindness. He donated food and clothing to the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, quietly helping those in need and reflecting his concern for others. Whether through his work, coaching, friendships, or generosity, Stacey touched lives in ways that will continue to be remembered.
Stacey will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his passion for sports, his commitment to education, and the countless ways he contributed to his community. His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the young people he mentored, the colleagues and friends he cherished, and the many lives he influenced along the way. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 35 years, Stacy R. Kelsaw; his sons, Juwan Kelsaw and Jeremiah Kelsaw; his cherished grandchildren, Josiah and Ellisia Kelsaw; and his brothers, Demetris Kelsaw of Chicago, Minister Geoffrey Kelsaw of Indianapolis, and Sean Kelsaw (Renee).
