

Thomas E. Hufford, 87, of Fort Wayne passed away Sunday May 24, 2026. He was born in Brownsburg, Indiana to the late Floyd and Margaret Hufford. He was a dedicated Indiana University basketball fan and earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Bloomington campus.
After teaching history and economics at Goshen, New Haven and Heritage High Schools, Tom began a career serving the community in the non-profit world, leading Consumer Credit Counseling of Northeast Indiana for over 35 years. He also served in several leadership positions including the board of the National Foundation for Consumer Credit; the board president of the Martin Luther King Montessori School in downtown Fort Wayne; the Leadership Fort Wayne Alumni Association and the Fort Wayne Rotary Club. For almost 50 years he was an active member of First Wayne Street United Methodist Church and served on the Pastor Parish Committee as well as sang in the choir.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Calkins Hufford. Together they raised two sons, Andrew (Terri) and David (Mindy) who survive. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah (Taylor) Browning and Erik, Brian and Joe Hufford.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Bill and Don; and sister, Marilyn.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, 6424 Winchester Road Fort Wayne, Indiana 46819, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. A private burial to follow the service at Lindenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Stillwater Hospice.
