I was friends with the Doners for the many years we lived in Kekionga Shores.  Vera was also in my Bible Study.   I enjoyed her friendship and we seemed to see each other around town frequently.

Vera was a good friend for many years since we both lived in Kekionga Shores Subdivision.  She was also in my Bible Study and our children knew each other at the Aboite Schools.  She was always friendly and I enjoyed her friendship.  She will be missed.

It is a tremendous challenge to capture the essence of Mom in just a few words and yet also very simple at the same time.  Challenging because she was so good that I could write a book about her goodness, simple because she lived up to her God-given name, because of a scripture verse that keeps coming back to me, because she is the essence of a saint, and lastly because she truly lived her priorities.
Vera means true or faith, depending on which origin of the word you read. Both qualities embody Mom. She served God and her church until the day she died. 
Her faith in God was evident by her daily living, by how she persevered through tremendous trials with strength and grace, and by her dedicated service at Trinity.
Her priorities in life were God, family and friends, similar to my Dad. She lived for others and always put others’ needs ahead of her own. 
I think of Sirach 6:14, when I think of Mom.“A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds it finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can measure his worth.”  I have witnessed Mom making friends and keeping friends for decades. She had few acquaintances and countless loving friends and so many gave back to her in such magnificent ways the last few years. 
Even though Mom and I have always had a wonderful bond, we did not confide in each other like friends might. We were mother and daughter. However, by the above definition, she was my best friend because she has always been my sturdy shelter. 
Mom did all things with great love….big ones and small actions alike and this is why I think of St. Teresa of Calcutta’s words when I think of Mom, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” I do not personally know anyone who does this like Mom. It was truly her way as it was St.Teresa’s.
This is not a good-bye, even though we are physically separated.  In heaven, there are no Macedonian good-byes, only eternal happiness and presence with God and your family, Momma. 



My sincere condolences to the family.  I enjoyed Vera's friendship while worshipping with her at Trinity over the years.  Her warmth and kindness will be missed.

Vera and I met when she started volunteering in the Ultrasound Department at St. Joseph's Hospital.  She became a dear friend.  She was so very thoughtful and caring and I cherished her friendship.  I am so sad  to hear of her passing.  She will be terribly missed.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Steve, Christine, Janet and family,

We extend our deepest sympathy to all of you on the passing of  your beloved Vera.  She was a good and caring person and we know she will be greatly missed by all of you.

We have been friends with her for over 65 years;  first as her students at Churubusco and later in life as friends that enjoyed  communicating with her via written letters as well as e-mails over the years.   We also had several nice visits and lunches with her and Dick  that were memorable.

This is difficult to do through tears and without Vera to talk it through…She would always send me angels and figurines with “Sisters are the Best Friends”.  Right before Vera’s passing, the wing on one of the two entwined angels that she sent broke and was sitting on the coffee table.  I fixed the wing with superglue after Vera passed, and it is in its usual place where I can see it all the time – just like ‘old times’.  Unfortunately, superglue doesn’t work for the hole in my heart...
As Vera and I have done for the last seven years, this is the time of day when I would normally be writing an email to Vera about routine things like recipes and normal life tasks, or I would be reading her email to me.  That hasn’t happened since the day after Easter, and it feels wrong.  
So, I decided to fill the emptiness right now by writing a memory (instead of the email), to honor my sister who was a great mediator between the old world, the new world and the modern world as she and Dick, plus my older brothers and their wives (they were older by 21+ years) helped my mother raise me after my father unexpectedly passed away a week before my first birthday.  I became a part of each of their families, and my nieces and nephews were closer to my age than my siblings were.  Now, I look to my nieces and nephews like I did my sister because they exhibit the same intelligence, faith, knowledge and love as Vera and Dick, Alex and LaVerne and George & Grace.
I was always so proud when Vera introduced me, her baby sister by 22 years, to her friends.  Plus, I treasured introducing her to my friends, and many of my friends  became her dear friends!  
I always told Vera she had a ’hotline to heaven’ when special prayers were needed.  I’ll keep listening and hoping it works in the reverse too…I already miss her insight, experience and unconditional love and support.
