Wayne worked for Martins construction, as a steelworker, until he was drafted into the U S Army in 1966. He was wounded in combat in November of 1967, which changed his life forever with a severe Traumatic Brain Injury. He was in 173rd Airborne.
He enjoyed yard work, fishing, watching Walker Texas Ranger, Westerns, Chicago Cubs baseball and doing church activities.
He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Theresa Hughes; and sons, Scott (Rachel) Hughes, Todd (Amy) Hughes, and David (Daina) Hughes. He was the proud grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. He also had 10 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Charlotte (Zeke) Rousseau.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Reba, Naomi; and 1 brother, Phil.
Visitation will be April 9, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, at The Pentecostals of Fort Wayne, 935 Farwood Avenue, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46816, with a Funeral Service directly following at Noon.
A Graveside Service with Army Honors will take place at Covington Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 8408 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46804, on April 9, 2026 at 2:30 pm.
