Anna Lee Carney was born, March 13,1926, at the home of her parents, near Thayer, Missouri. She was the youngest daughter and 11th born child of a school teacher/farmer and hardworking homemaker. One of her fondest memories was sitting around the fire with her family and falling asleep with her head in her mother's lap while her father played the violin. Another was doing her homework around the table by the light of the old Aladdin oil lamp.
When she was very young her family moved back to Arkansas, and lived at the foot of Huckleberry Mountain, in Harkey Valley (named after her mother's family). But after moving again, she attended elementary school, in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. The family struggled through some very difficult times during the depression years, but their faith was always strong. Anna Lee was baptized as a young girl while worshiping at the nearby Church of Christ. She loved her large family fiercely which is something that never changed.
Meeting the love of her life young, she married William Martin Spain at age 18. They shared many adventures together, including their first home, in Sentinel, Oklahoma, they called 'The Goat Ranch". They welcomed their first baby, Melissa Ann, in 1953, and their second, William Jeffrey, in 1957. A move between air force bases, in 1970,brought them and their teenage children to Crowley, Texas.
Anna Lee loved her home, garden, and the friends they made there. She spent decades of faithful service to her church family and enjoyed weekly ladies class. She was a talented seamstress, gifted cook, and enjoyed nights of playing dominos and wahoo with their special group of friends. A treasured tradition was making Christmas cookies with her granddaughters, and no family dinner was complete without her showing her love through baked goods, most often her pecan pie. She was able to stay in her home up to 3 years ago, with the aid and loving help from her children. From there she has lived and been blessed with tender care at The Wilshire Senior Living, in Burleson, Texas.
Anna Lee blessed others throughout her long life of 99 years, and she will be deeply missed. Anna Lee was preceded in death by her Loving husband of 66 years, Bill, daughter-in-law, Debra Heisey Spain, her parents, Jeff and Callie Carney, her ten siblings, Alpha Elizabeth, Robert Roy, Nannie Mae, Mary Ellen, Ruby Jewell, Edna Irene, Annie Aline, Wanda lnez, and twins, Sula & Lula. She is survived by her children, Melissa & Gerald Greener and Jeffrey Spain, her granddaughters, Amy & James Moore and Sara & Henry Calvillo, and her great-grandchildren, Cameron, Claire, Luke, and Brooklyn Anna.
