“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
Bernice Beatrice Walker, 77, of Fort Worth, was born on May 1, 1949, in Hubbard, Texas, and passed away on July 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Throughout her life, she was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt whose generosity, faith, and devotion made her the steady rock of her family.
That devotion to others was reflected in Bernice’s chosen profession. After attending West Texas State, she earned her nursing degree from South Plains College and went on to devote more than 40 years to caring for patients with compassion and dedication.
More than forty years ago, Bernice entered a healthcare system that was not always welcoming to African American women. She met its challenges with quiet strength and resilience, remaining deeply devoted to caring for others.
Those who knew Bernice through her work remember not only her skill as a nurse, but also the comfort, patience, and dignity she brought to each person in her care.
Bernice’s caring nature extended well beyond her work as a nurse. Her home was always open—for a meal, a visit, or a place to stay when someone needed it—and she had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and at home.
For Bernice, caring for people was never limited by title or circumstance. She offered practical help, a listening ear, and a dependable presence, creating a sense of belonging for relatives and friends alike.
At the heart of Bernice’s generosity was her faith. It guided her daily life and found expression in her kindness, service, and quiet strength.
Her quiet strength was matched by a fiery spirit. Bernice stood firmly for what she believed in and never hesitated to speak up, especially when protecting the people she loved.
Alongside her commitment to family, faith, and service, Bernice found joy in life’s everyday pleasures. She enjoyed reading, listening to music, taking long walks, tending her yard, and attending sporting events.
Above all, Bernice treasured her family. She took pride in nurturing younger generations, encouraging those she loved, and remaining a steady source of support through every season of life.
Bernice’s life was shaped by the family who came before her and the loved ones who surrounded her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle Bluitt and Burnett Walker, and her siblings, Henry Jo Hopkins Jr., Nettie Ruth Campbell, and Alice Marie Manus.
Her memory will be lovingly carried forward by her children, Farias Keith Walker (Alejandrina) and Shawn Dion Walker (Lisa); her grandchildren, Coleman Walker, Kennede Walker, Camron Walker, Brittani Graham, Jackson Graham, Naima Henderson, and Carmelo Henderson; her sisters, Essie Mae White and Mary Ann Wallace; her uncle, Earnest Bluitt; her brother-in-law, Joe Manus (Ruby); her sister-in-law, Magnolia Archi-Hopkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews whom she helped raise and nurture.
Through the patients she cared for, the family members she nurtured, and the many people she welcomed into her life, Bernice leaves a legacy of love, stability, and faith. Her steady presence and generous spirit will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew her.
During Bernice’s illness, her family was sustained by the compassionate care and steadfast support of many people. The family extend heartfelt thanks to the oncology team and nursing staff at Harris Methodist in Fort Worth for their attentive care, to the staff at Green Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation for their kindness and support, and to the relatives and friends who stood by her. The family deeply appreciates every prayer, visit, and expression of love during this time.
Family and friends are invited to honor Bernice’s life at an open viewing on August 2, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Stateroom at Laurel Land Funeral Home of Fort Worth, 7100 Crowley Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76134.
