Charlie was born December 15, 1929 in Baytown, Texas, to Charles Andrew and Clara Marie Vaughan. The Vaughan family soon moved to Fort Worth, where Charlie graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in 1948. While there, he ran track, memorized poetry, and met his wife of 68 years, Jennie. They were married March 5, 1950, from then on providing a paradigm for their friends and family of a loving, godly marriage. Charlie served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Topeka, Kansas and Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1951 he began working in the transportation division at General Dynamics, now Lockheed Martin, as a forklift driver. His dedication to his work for 41 years was a model of excellence to all who knew him, and his ability to pick dimes off of the floor with his forklift entertained his colleagues. Charlie’s self-discipline and can-do attitude continued in his retirement, when he took up playing golf with friends, astonishing them with a hole-in-one, and volunteered as a marshal at the course. He tirelessly beautified his yard in Burleson, TX, letting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren join him in the leaf-raking and blackberry-picking to learn the value of hard work. His last moments in this life were spent on his lawnmower, his way of relaxing after returning from a workout at the fitness center that he frequented. Charlie deeply loved his family and his church family. He served for many years as a deacon and usher at Southwayside Baptist Church in Fort Worth. His attention to prayer, studying the Bible, and visiting people in need made him a model for younger people in the church.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Clara, and his siblings, Mary, Bruce, and Dorothy. He is survived by his loving wife, Jennie, children, Cynthia Reece and Rebecca Hardie, grandchildren, Russell Jones and Bryan, Vaughan Steven, Timothy, and Andrew Reece, and great-grandchildren, Beatrice Jones and Jeremiah, Josiah, Jedidiah, and Selah Reece, all of whom are thankful to have had such a wonderful example to follow in loving one another.
