Coy Lee Mickens, born September 25, 1946. With loving parents, Roscoe Mickens and Lovie
Brown, residing in Fort Worth, Texas where he spent his childhood with his siblings; Roy Lee
Mickens (brother), Constance Faye Mickens (sister), and Roscoe Mickens (brother). Coy loved
to go fishing and hunting with his brothers and brother in law Kenneth Queen. He had a large
collection of fishing rods and gear. Attending Como Public Schools, Coy Lee gained his
education, intelligence and his title as best dressed, along with his older twin Brother Roy
Mickens, Coy being the baby twin as Roy was born 9 minutes before him. To buying fancy
shoes and custom-made clothing, leaving them looking exceptional every time they stepped out.
In the great summer weather in 1963, Coy was just a Como neighborhood boy when he met
(“Toosie”) Laverne Mickens. One day they took a nice evening stroll where coy would soon
begin to ask Laverne to prom in the spring. Knowing how smooth Coy was, Laverne said
“YES”. As time passes on, it was prom time. Coy called Laverne to come pick her up at her
home on Humbert St. Looking as tall, dark and handsome a man could be, Coy pulled up with a
corsage in hand and the biggest grin on his face as he walked over to the front door. He walked
Laverne over to his “car”, which he later called “a piece of junk”. He opened the door for
Laverne then took off into the night, beginning the best night of their lives. 2 sweet young
lovebirds, doing what most young people do and that's have puppy love for one another. Later
that night, Laverne leaned over and kissed Coy for the 1st time, confirming the date to prom was
a success. From that moment on, decades later, and for the next 50+ years, you would never see
Coy without Laverne right next to him.
In the year 1964, on August 28th, Coy proposed to Laverne and they got married. Shortly after
they bought their 1st home at 18, which resided in Eastwood. They welcomed their 1st child,
precious beautiful baby boy, who they soon named Kevin Fitzgerald Mickens. Kevin was born
January 29th, 1966. They were as happy as happy can be at their home, but opportunity arose as
they were both presented the chance to begin careers together at the same company, Lockheed
Martin, that career residing in Burbank, California. A long way away from home (Texas). They
both up and relocated to first their apartment in Pacoima then soon moved to their house at
12463 Pierce st Pacoima, California. Not ever being inseparable from one another, life and deep
love for one another, would bring forth the birth of their 2nd born child, another handsome baby
boy, Courtney Mickens, born on January 12th, 1975. 2 years later Coy and Laverne gave birth to
their very 1st girl, precious baby Qiana Myishah Mickens, born May 29th, 1977. Completing Coy
and Laverne's line of children, their life in California was full of life and joy. Courtney and
Qiana participating in modeling events and separate sports of their own. Courtney playing
football and basketball, becoming an athlete in his own league, to winning awards and trophy's
for his hard work and being a star player. Qiana being a cheerleader and focusing on her
academics and meeting new friends, met along the way her childhood best friend Tennille aka
“Toenail”, who Coy and Laverne would soon to basically adopt and considered her as a family
friend. Kevin would leave and begin college after graduating from Birmingham high school of
Van Nuys, California in 1984. He attended California state Northridge, in Northridge California
and Houston Tillotson in Austin, Texas. Receiving a degree as a Paralegal and was pursuing his
law degree.
In 1991, the Mickens family would move back to Texas, Round Rock more specifically, Qiana
then added 2 new additions of family friends to the family. Those family friends being Erika
Effinger and Corey Johnson who are still her very close friends. As time passed on, Qiana gave
birth to her 1st child, a blessing and Coy and Laverne's 1st grandchild, a beautiful baby girl,
Raché Mickens, born July 1st, 1994. A bundle of joy for the whole family. Coy owned his own
Youth center at Youth Enhancements Services in Belton, Texas, counseling kids and giving them
a safe space to be after school. Coy also would work for Raytheon Aerospace in Greenville,
Texas. Tragically on Friday, April 28th, 1995, Coy and Laverne experienced what no parent
should have to endure, and that was the loss of their child, Kevin Fitzgerald Mickens. The entire
Mickens family succumbed to devastation, as there was no greater soul or as kind of a person as
this beloved son and brother. But soon to come there was a blessing in disguise so heartwarming
and healing after Qiana would give birth to another blessing, Tajé Mickens, born February 21st
1998. The Mickens family would then move to Burleson, Texas in 2000. Followed shortly after
Qiana gave birth to Janay Mickens and Jazzmere Mickens, twins, both born August 18th, 2002. 4
beautiful granddaughters that Coy and Laverne loved and adored beyond any ability to measure,
becoming basically a 2nd set of parents to them.
From 1963 till beyond, the love and admiration of 2 people, have spread and trickled down the
family tree, leaving a mark on the Mickens legacy. Mourning and grieving is what comes within
this beautiful life. As a family our strength and ability to move forward, is the direct will power
of God. We are not equipped to fail and succumb to depression. Although our beloved Coy is no
longer with us physically in this world, his spirit, legacy of the Mickens family, leading his
family by example, and love and faith in God, resides still, here with us forever in our hearts,
minds, and souls. From barbecuing on a hot summer day, family gatherings, listening to soulful
classics like Al Green and Marvin Gaye, to favorite family movies, and tears, from nowhere,
from an emptiness that longs for his voice or touch, will be reminders that he lives in and around
us, through us, the MICKENS family and friends. We will mourn and grieve the loss of Coy Lee
Mickens, and with the grace of God, we will overcome this sadness and be able to accept it, in
due time.
Coy leaves to this world, his Daughter, Qiana Mickens; His son, Courtney Mickens;
Granddaughters, Raché Mickens, Tajé Mickens, Janay Mickens, and Jazzmere Mickens, and
countless relatives and friends. He is preceded by glory by the love of his life, his beloved wife,
Laverne Queen Mickens (Tootsie); His beloved son, Kevin Fitzgerald Mickens; His beloved
twin brother, Roy Lee Mickens; His beloved sister, Constance Faye Mickens; His beloved
brother, Roscoe Mickens (Flick), and mother and father, Lovie Brown and Roscoe Mickens.
