Darrell Wayne "Shorty" Johnson passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 25, 2016, in Newman, Ga., at the age of 43. He had been battling cancer since July 2015. Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, at Great Commission Baptist Church, 7700 McCart Ave. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Laurel Land Funeral Home, 7100 Crowley Rd. Pastor Tyrone Morgan will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Darrell’s life. The family would like to thank the Cancer Treatment Center in Newman, Ga for their efforts and care to keep him here with us as long as possible. Darrell was born on June 22, 1972 in Alexandria, La. He graduated Mineral Wells High school in 1991 and from Langston University in 1996 with a degree Radio Broadcasting/Criminal Justice. After moving to Dallas, Tx, Darrell began working for Dallas County as a Correctional Officer before moving on to the Federal Department of Corrections in Fort Worth. He married Carmen Johnson in June of 2000. Over period of 17 years, the couple welcomed 3 children into their home. His children remember him as a driven father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Darrell an accomplished dancer and often was the life of the party. He was a very outgoing individual who loved people and traveling but was most of all passionate about job. He was an active member of the Great Commission Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by Father, Clarence Blade of Pineville, La and Annie Blade of Alexandria, La. Very special niece/caregiver Kierra Green and Aaliyah. Nephews: DeAndre, Nathan, Earnest, Patrick, Darrien and Brandon. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
