He was married to Diane Peppers Schmidt on December 31, 1977 in Gorman, Texas.
David worked in grocery throughout his career, working for Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie, and then Brookshires.
David was an avid Dallas Stars hockey fan as well as the Dallas Cowboys. His hobby he was most passionate about was HO scale model trains, especially modeling the Texas & Pacific steam era trains.
He was preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Teafatiller Downs and father Henry A. Schmidt.
He is survived by his wife Diane Peppers Schmidt, children Jennifer Schmidt Stewart and Cody Tyrel Schmidt. Granddaughter Amelia Rose Stewart. Sister Peggy Guettsche and her husband J C., niece Katie Guettsche and her family, cousins Donald Erwin, Brent Erwin, Tonya Upchurch and their families.
