Doris Jean Cooksey was born on November 9, 1928, in Cushing, Oklahoma, to Minnie LeEtta Hays. She had three sisters, Faye, Lorraine, and Anna Bernice, one brother, Lester, and two step-siblings. Doris was predeceased by her loving husband, James A. Reaugh. Family members include: Children: Robin Steinmann (Gary) of Edwardsville, IL; Cindy Bartlett (Jeff) of Fort Worth, TX; Randall Reaugh (Melinda Trautman) of Denver, CO. Grandchildren: Jennifer Brunson (Casey); James Newton; Rebecca Duncan (Dustin); Ashtyn Reaugh. Great grandchildren: Collier Brunson, Colby Brunson, Jones Brunson, Whitaker Duncan.
Doris grew up in Enid, Oklahoma, and moved to Miami, Oklahoma, during her early teen years. She attended “Business College” in Miami, and there she met the love of her life, Jimmy Reaugh, at the baseball fields. (She denies being a baseball groupie.) They were married on December 2, 1949. Jim and Doris returned to Topeka, where he played semi-pro baseball, and Doris worked to support their new lifestyle.
Jim continued to play semi-pro baseball, which took them to Kearney, Nebraska, where Robin was born. Doris became the typical stay-at-home mom that she thrived on throughout the years. Their next stop was Eureka, Kansas, where Cindy was born. In the late 1950s, when Oklahoma became a “wet” state, Jim was hired by Schenley Distillers, and they made the move to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Randy was born in Tulsa.
Doris continued her career as the mom at home, holding down the fort each week as Jim traveled the state and region. She was always busy, whether being the Girl Scout troop leader, shuffling all three kids to and from the dreaded piano lessons each week, volunteering at St. John’s church, pretending to enjoy going out on the boat, and always being there for the kids. She was a fabulous bridge player and held many “bridge parties” throughout the years. She stayed busy with activities that would keep up her business skills and could still take shorthand like the best of them! Family vacations were taken every year – 2-week trips to Colorado, California, and Florida. We all remember traveling in our big station wagon non-stop to reach our destination.
Doris and Jim relocated to Denver, Colorado, in 1975. Doris quickly realized it was time to go back to work. Of course, Jim didn’t really like that idea, except when all the kids could come enjoy skiing and family times together all on “Dad’s” dime. Doris went to work for Johns Manville and loved driving into the mountains each day to the beautiful office. She retired in 1991.
Doris and Jim loved to travel all over the US and Europe. Several trips were made to Hawaii and Alaska, most of the US states, Spain, Scotland, Germany, and London. London was mom’s favorite place to travel and they went there five times.
After retirement, Doris and Jim moved back to Oklahoma at Lake Fort Gibson and later Broken Arrow, where they played a lot of golf and bridge and went fishing. Their final relocation brought them to Fort Worth, Texas, where they made new friends, continued to play bridge, and enjoyed more family time as everyone visited. Whether you called her Mother, Mom, Grandma or Grandmommy, you knew that you were loved!
Many friends were made along the way during their lifetime together. The Perrine family (Topeka), the Brandt family (Kearney), the Aldridge family (Eureka and Tulsa), the Wright family (Tulsa), and the Roy family (Broken Arrow)……and all those friends’ children—are still considered family by the entire Reaugh family. We would like to thank you for the many years of friendship we have enjoyed with you all.
