Dorothy Lee Petty

Funeral: 10 a.m. Saturday Dec 2 at Handley Baptist/ Church on Rush Creek Handley.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday Dec 1 at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born July 31, 1925 in Lamesa, TX. to Albert and Sonie Blake and was the oldest of 10 children. She spent her childhood in west Texas. Due to the death of her father at a young age, she was put into the role of caring for her siblings while her mother worked to provide for the family.

On Feb 16, 1946 she married Jack Petty in Del Rio, TX. They moved to Fort Worth in 1949 where Dorothy took a job as a riveter at General Dynamics. Being big at heart but small in stature, the rivet gun recoil would throw her back necessitating the need to transfer her to flight control cable installation in tight areas of the aircraft fuselage.

Jack and Dorothy joined Handley Baptist Church in 1949 and served there until their deaths. Dorothy was active as nursery worker, Sunday school teacher, WMU member, VBS teacher and various committees.

Dorothy was passionate about cooking, sewing and caring for others. Being proclaimed by her grandchildren as “the best cook in the world”, she would prepare and provide meals to grieving families at Handley Baptist as well as others in need in the Handley area. As a frugal seamstress, she would go to fabric stores to buy the remnants to make clothes for her children all the way through their elementary school years and would always sew Easter clothes for them every year. Up into her late 80’s she would transport (at very high speeds) the “old people” to their doctor’s appointments.

As a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she spent endless hours caring and nurturing her husband, children and especially her grandchildren and their friends. She was a perfect example of a godly woman.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Jack, three sisters, five brothers, and daughter Debbie.

She is survived by her son Randy Petty and his wife Deanna, daughter Donna Crawford, grandchildren William Petty, Michael and Heather Petty, James and Kristina Petty, Travis and Matthew Crawford, Josh, Katie, David, and Sarah Cline. Great grandson Gabe Elliott and sister Belle Driver.
