Erma Cargill Van Nest passed away on August 22, 2019 and has now rejoined her beloved husband Bob. They were married for over 60 years. Erma was a mother for four children, Marie, Steve, Joseph and Park. She had five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Erma was raised in Oklahoma as a child by her Grandparents, George and Jenny Cargill. Erma and Bob met in high school and, except for the period of the War, they were always together thereafter, until Bob’s passing in 2010.
Erma had other qualities that defined her life. Erma was compassionate to others in need. When asked to help a single mother resolve her children care needs in a small West Texas town Erma took the two young boys into our home and raised them along with us as her own. Erma showed such compassion for others as well. If she saw people acting in abusive or unthoughtful ways to people less fortunate or powerless to the other party she did not think twice about getting in front of someone and setting them straight. She volunteered with the Cub Scouts, 4H Club and various school activities. In 1958 she was named Woman of the Year for Denver City, Texas.
Erma and Bob loved to travel. Whether it was in their camper, visiting all 50 states along the way, including Delaware, or traveling internationally they never tired of such adventures. Erma loved sports, especially basketball. She played hoops on her school teams. Thereafter, she learned to endure watching all sorts of sports as played by her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
We will miss this fine woman. Her will and determination shaped our lives. May God bring her peace and joy in the times ahead.
