Fern Packer, 93 years young, went to heaven on February 7, 2013. She was raised in Denton and completed a business degree at North Texas State University in 1941. In 1942, she met an Army pilot (or as she called him “a fly boy”), J.L. Packer, who was training in Denton and in 1946, after WWII was over, they married. During his military career, they lived in Japan, Austria, Germany and various U.S. states. While in Austria, their daughter Mari Lynn was born. After their travels, Fern received a master’s degree in library science, settled in Haltom City with her husband and daughter, and served as librarian for ten years at Boswell High School in Saginaw.
Fern lived at Meadow Lakes Retirement Community for 15 years and was well-loved by her friends and the staff, who enjoyed her sense of humor and love of laughter. She is treasured and missed by her daughter Lynn, son-in-law Steve, granddaughters Marianne and Amy and her brother Herbert Church.
