Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 10 a.m. at North Fort Worth Baptist Church, 5801 I-35 West Fort Worth, Texas 76131. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday October 15,2023 at Shannon Rufe Snow Drive Funeral Chapel, 6001 Rufe Snow Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76148. He will be laid to rest in the mausoleum at Greenwood Memorial Park next to his first wife, Sue A. Nelson, who preceded him in death on July 10, 2000.
Harmon was born on June 11, 1940 in Caddo Gap, Arkansas to Hazel Elva Smith and Andrew Harmon Nelson. After graduating Amarillo High School, Harmon enlisted in the Marine Corps for six years. When he left the Marine Corp, he joined the Army and remained there until he retired. In 1961, he met and married Sue Allen Burchfield in Amarillo and it was there they raised their family - Tammy, Lee, and Penny. In 1969, Harmon began working at Bell Helicopter in Amarillo, Texas and in 1989, he moved to Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, where he retired in 2008. After the death of his first wife, he married Joyce Johnson in 2004. In 2014 he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and fought a valiant fight, even surprising many of his doctors.
Some of his hobbies include his love of pickups, camping, square dancing, and traveling. He enjoyed holidays, playing practical jokes, collecting pens, being involved in his children’s and grandchildren’s school activities, and his ability to make people smile. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Kiva Temple in Amarillo, the Moslah Shrine in Fort Worth, the Scottish Rite, and enjoyed driving children to the Shrine Hospital in Houston and Galveston for medical treatment.
Survivors: wife Joyce Nelson and her family; he and Sue’s daughter Tammy Shelton and her husband David; son H. Lee Nelson; family friend Tim Cowan; daughter Penny Lehew and her husband Ron; four grandchildren - Katie Sue and her wife Jess; Amy; Austin and his wife Hunter; and Ashley; three great grandchildren - Noah, Lincoln and Zoie; sister-in-law Glenda Jean Johnson, her son Deon, and his son Aaron and his husband Maudiel; brother-in-law Lynn Burchfield and his wife Rhonda; numerous nieces and nephews.
