

Nashville, Tennessee. As a child he attended Joseph Medill Elementary School in Chicago,
Illinois. Furthering his education, he graduated from Dunbar High School. James took on
employment in his early years and worked for Alberto V05 company. Because he was a man
with great ambition, he was hired to teach and manage in the art of reupholstery at the pretisago
Malcolm X College in Chicago. In 1957 he met Julia Taylor and later married on July 24, 1961.
To their union three children were born. In 1967 he was employed with Chicago Transit
Authority as a bus operator and instructor for nearly 28 years. Shortly after James' retirement
on October 1, 1997 from CTA, he and Julia became entrepreneurs in real estate acquiring
income property in the city of Chicago.
In his community he was very instrumental in working with youths in little league baseball and
being a mentor for troubled teens. He also provided support to community policing for a better
and safer neighborhood. He was an avid lover of sports, especially the Chicago Bulls & Bears.
In 1984 the entire family joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and all were baptised. Later in his
spiritual calling he committed himself to becoming a faithful deacon in the church which would
inspire him to be part of the Men’s Ministry Choir.
Years later, James and Julia, moved to Texas to be closer to their children and grandchildren to
live out their retirement. In 2016, James and Julia became members of St. John Church to continue their spiritual growth under the leadership of Pastor Denny Davis.
On Sunday, August 30, 2020, James was called home to be with his Lord and join the heavenly
host of angels along with his mother, Helen; father, George; brother, George Jr. and sister,
Betty.
James is survived by his wife, Julia; sons, James Ray (California), Darnell and daughter,
Vanessa, along with three grandchildren; Khyrie, Serena & Darnell Jathan and a host of family
and friends near and far.
