Life Story For Josephine Reynolds Smith
Josephine Reynolds Smith was born on January 25, 1925 to Ozemia and Bernadette Reynolds. She was the first born child of eleven children. She had a wonderful childhood growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana. She attended St. Paul Catholic School and Holy Rosary Catholic High School. At the age of twenty- six , she met and married her life long companion, James Smith, Sr., and they were united in Holy Matrimony on September 22, 1951. To this union came the blessing of three children. Josephine was a loving devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She loved to cook and work in her flower garden, but her true passions were serving the Lord and spending time with family, grandchildren and great grandchild. Josephine was always present to love, guide and support her children, throughout their lives. She instilled the value and importance of spirituality, family, respect and hard work. Josephine was known by family and friends as Joe, Nanny Joe, Mama Joe, Ms. Josephine and Joe-Phine, but most of all, Mama and Me-Maw was what she was most proud of.
Josephine was a faithful member of Our Mother Of Mercy Catholic Church for fifty plus years. She was a member of Saint Anne’s Altar Society, Our Mother Of Mercy Prayer Group and Bereavement Committee, March of Dimes and Saint Andrews United Methodist Church Senior Adult Ministry. Saint Anne’s Altar Society honored her with the Time and Dedication Award in 1985-1987, Appreciation of Service Award 1992, Our Mother Of Mercy 2014 Benediction To Mankind Honoree Award and one of the recipients of Our Mother Of Mercy 2018 Legacy Honoree. She was always available to serve where needed. Josephine is preceded in death by her husband, James Smith, Sr.; parents, Ozemia and Bernadette Reynolds; sisters, Mary Lee Reynolds, Beverly St. Julien and Alfreda Journet; brothers, Edward Dallas Reynolds, Dudley Reynolds, James Louis Reynolds and two infant brothers.
Josephine shall forever be remembered in the hearts of two daughters, Beverley Smith-Obrien (Richard) and Barbara Haynes (Barry); one son, James Smith, Jr. (Jacquelyn); four grandchildren, Barry Hayes, Jr. Brittany Haynes Peldyak (Jordan), Kamisha White and Brianna Smith; one great grandchild, Karryne Smith and a great grandson arriving in July; two brothers, Joseph Reynolds (Melvina) of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana and Anthony Reynolds, Sr. (Linda) of Lafayette, Louisiana; nephew, Harold Reynolds who is just like a brother; and a host of nephews, nieces and wonderful friends.
