Karon Lynn was born on April 25, 1951, to Charles Hill and Marlene Gilkey in Wichita, Kansas. She was later adopted by Adolphus Gilkey and her family migrated to Texas in her young teen years. She attended Dunbar High School, graduating in 1969. From there, she went on to attend Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie, TX.
Affectionately known as “Cricket”, Karon had a God-given talent to sing and play the piano. Her nickname fitted her because she was small yet mighty and did not require a microphone when singing. She had a keen ear to hear music and play without any formal training. Her gift made room for her, and she conducted choirs, performed for many churches, and mentored many, including Evangelist Cynthia Crochett. This musical talent has been passed down through her children and children’s children.
Karon loved many things, but her favorites were fashion and design. When you wanted to look good or get some pointers on improving your home decor - you went to “The Queen.” She had such an artistic heart - brightly shone by her otherworldly creative talents. Karon always presented herself as a masterpiece in everything she did.
The frequent words used to describe Karon ranged from feisty to strong-willed to loving. While she didn’t have everything, she was quick to give, even if the result found her going without. Fueled by her knowledge of the Bible and its scriptures, Karon’s servant’s heart led her to impact every life she encountered. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at a young age and held onto God’s word, through challenging circumstances.
Karon adored her family and showered her legacy with love. She was a pillar of support and was present for many of the milestones. Her grandchildren called her “GMA” and they adored her spunky view on life. Her children were her most valuable asset.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Hill; her father, Adolphus Gilkey, and her first spouse, Robert L. Swain Jr.
Those left to cherish her memory: her mother, Ms. Marlene Gilkey; great-aunts, Ms. Minnie Watson and Ms. Mary Jo Mason, sister, Edith Gilkey; former spouse, Donald Derrough; children: Miquel (LaKedra) Swain, Janekka (Ralph) Colbert, Karryn Derrough, and Derryan (Elaine) Derrough; G-Ma to Mi’ckel, Myiah, Trinity, Elijah, Adrian, Jordan, Emery, Israel, and Ezekiel; and great-grandchildren, Iris and Ava and a host of friends and loved ones.
