Lola Faye Johnson was born on June 14, 1931 in Leesville, Louisiana to Chester Arthur and Lola Ursula (Crier) Stephens. She grew up working hard with her brothers and sister, enjoying the freedom of the country while raising all their own food, chickens and pigs.
After graduation from High School, she attended college briefly. She went to visit her sister, Gladys and husband Leonard, who were stationed in San Angelo, Texas. While there, Leonard was talking to a friend on the phone from the Service. He put Lola on the phone, and a romance began, with Robert Allen (Johnny) Johnson, a handsome young sergeant from North Dakota. They married in April of 1950. So the North joined the South when they united!
Their union would take her all over the U. S. from 1951 to 1973, and in 1957 they headed to Spain for three years. This Louisiana girl saw the country from California to South Carolina, from Montana to Texas, as she raised her 4 kids, faithfully supporting her military husband.
“Mom, Nanny, Faye” loved to cook, especially for family gatherings and would often host family for holidays and birthdays. Reflecting her Southern roots, she would serve up ribs and dirty rice, chicken and dumplings, fried chicken and red beans in her “magic” bean pot. And trifle, of course!
“Nanny,” as her grandkids always called her, knew the way to their hearts, through her cooking. They knew she was generous to a fault, was a giver and understood the meaning of unconditional love. Her heart was as big as her hair, she always dressed “to the nines,” and loved her kids and grandkids well.
She taught her kids so many good things and we will miss her so very much. She died one day before her 87th birthday, as if she refused to be “that old!”
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Robert Allen Johnson, five
