Midori Matsuda Bird died on December 9, 2023, at the age of 86. Born in Japan on March 31, 1937, Midori was the daughter of Chokichi and Natsu Matsuda. When she was a young woman, she moved to the U.S. and became a U.S. citizen in 1966. She eventually settled in Fort Worth and was a hairstylist on the west side of town for many years. Known for her independent spirit, resilience and big heart, Midori enjoyed attending social events with her late husband, Lt. Col. Robert F. Bird.
Midori was a longtime member of the Fort Worth Japanese Society and an avid gardener. She grew a wide variety of flowers, fruits and vegetables and generously gave away her bounty to friends and co-workers. Midori also loved animals and delighted in doting on her cherished cats and dogs.
Midori was grateful for the steadfast support of her friends and neighbors; and in her final years, she appreciated the care provided by the Ridglea Senior Living and St. Gabriel’s Hospice and Palliative Care staff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Worth Japanese Society or the Fort Worth Japanese Garden, in care of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.
