Tuesday, September 29, 2020, surrounded by loving family.
Mildred was born on November 25, 1917, in Coryell County, Texas, to Charlsie and
John McKinney, the oldest of their three girls. She was valedictorian of her Moshiem
High School senior class, and after graduation, she married her sweetheart Lloyd P.
Riddle on June 22, 1935. The following year, they moved to Fort Worth, where they put
down roots and raised their four children.
For 77 years, Mildred was a member of Travis Avenue Baptist Church, where she was
very active. She led various youth activities, including Girls Auxiliary (GA’s) and was
also a long-time member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU). She celebrated her
50th wedding anniversary as well as her 100th birthday there.
Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were the joy of
her life. She always enjoyed attending countless sporting events, numerous dance and
piano recitals, birthday parties, graduations, weddings, showers and other events.
Mildred thoroughly enjoyed hearing all about what was going on in everyone’s lives.
She always had time for a phone call or visit, and always offered “a little something to
nibble on” - typically something she had made herself. And oh, she loved to laugh,
especially at herself.
She liked nothing more than to have a house full of friends and family to feed. Everyone
was always welcome, and there was always room for another place at the table, with
enough leftovers to “send a plate home.” Many a cookbook includes recipes from her
kitchen, including her oft-requested German chocolate pie.
Mildred was a talented seamstress, stitching many of her own clothes. She also made
a number of lovely quilts and crocheted blankets, and even sewed all three
bridesmaids’ dresses and matching head pieces for her oldest daughter’s wedding.
With their children grown, Mildred and Lloyd spent many happy hours tending their
bountiful gardens, at their farm in Hill County, as well as the one in their backyard.
During tax season, she would help out at Lloyd’s CPA office, answering phones and
serving as a second set of eyes in reviewing tax returns.
Their many travels included a Scandinavian and an Alaskan cruise, a trip to Hawaii, a
few Branson, Missouri, excursions, and several fall foliage tours. They also enjoyed
many trips to see family and friends and visiting with relatives at family reunions.
Mildred was a loyal and loving friend. She and Lloyd were blessed by a close group of
dear friends from church who regularly played 42 together, which was really more of an
excuse to share a meal, swap recipes, and catch up with each other. They also enjoyed
their close-knit Edgecliff neighbors.
A deep and abiding faith guided Mildred throughout her life. She followed Jesus’
admonition to “love thy neighbor as thyself” which compelled her to serve others as
His hands and feet in whatever situation she found herself. She set an example for all
of us and lived out her love for the Lord through her words and deeds and in her
unconditional love for us.
To her adoring family, she was quite simply the most wonderful Mother, Grandma, and
Granny we could have ever hoped or wished for. We will miss her terribly and grieve
her loss for the rest of our lives. Yet we are comforted in knowing she is reunited with
Lloyd and all of her loved ones who have gone on before her.
Mildred is preceded in death by her husband of almost 67 years, Lloyd P. Riddle,
daughter Paula Morris, parents Charlsie and John McKinney, and sisters Ruth Poston
and Ione Drahn. Survivors include children Linda Riddle-Wittmer (Gary) of San Diego,
Donna Forrest and Mac Riddle (Susan) of Fort Worth; grandchildren Marla Morris,
Monty Morris (Shannan), Kevin Morris, Jeff Forrest, Doug Forrest (Maggie), Laura
Gassaway (Wyatt), Brady Riddle (Shawna), Cacie Gates (Mike), Wilson Riddle (Sarah)
and Steven Riddle; as well as 16 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren,
many nieces, nephews and their families.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 5, at 1:30pm in the foyer of Travis Avenue Baptist
