Patricia Williams Harris was born Jacqulyn Ruth Jackson on October 6, 1936 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas to Bennie Ruth Burke. She was reared in Fort Worth, Texas by her maternal grandparents Ed and Viola Burke. She attended Como Elementary School until fifth grade, then later moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to be with her mother and other siblings. After returning to Texas, she continued her schooling as a student at Como Middle and Junior High School. As a young child, she received her religious education at the Pleasant Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Sunday school, Baptist Training Union, and other youth activities. She was baptized by the late Pastor J.L. Lenley. As an adult, she converted to Catholicism and attended Holy Family Catholic Church.
“Patsy” as her immediate family called her, was a very bright and giving person that had a love for singing. Her hobbies included gardening, interior decorating, and watching sports on television. She loved watching basketball games and was a die-hard Los Angeles Lakers fan. Patsy loved her five grandchildren and spoiled them every chance she got. She often gave them sage advice about life and delicious things to eat and drink.
She began her early employment as a domestic and was told by one of her employers, “You’re too smart to work in my kitchen!” After that, she became interested in pursuing a nursing career. She received an Associate’s Degree from Tarrant County Junior College (TCJC) in General Studies in 1978. One year later, she entered the nursing program at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). She left UTA and began private duty nursing until she retired.
