

Herbert was born June 21, 1954, to Marjorie Tatum and Herbert Brisbane, Sr. in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was a product of Wichita Falls public schools and was a graduate of Rider High School. Herbert attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls on a basketball scholarship. He was featured in Sports Illustrated in 1975 for his athletic accomplishments.
Herbert received a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Through the years, Herbert served in various roles in the ministry, including: Baylor Grapevine Scott and White Hospital-Chaplain, Antioch Baptist Church- Director of Pastoral Care and Evangelism, North American Mission Board- Manager of Multicultural Evangelism, Home Mission Board Southern Baptist Convention- Associate Director Black Church Extension and Director of Black Church Evangelism, HMB/ North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Tennessee Baptist Convention, Brentwood Baptist Church- Minister of Missions and Singles, Texas Southern University -Baptist Student Union Director, and Sam Houston State University -Associate Director of Baptist Student Union.
From 2010-2013, Herbert served as a Trustee for the International Mission Board and was Commissioned as a Home Missionary by the Southern Baptist Convention in 1990.
Herbert was a published author, having written, “The Journey of Brokenness” Published by Xulon Press in 2017, in which Herbert reflects on and chronicles his amazement at the hand of God directing his life’s plan. In his own words, “I did not see the thin thread than ran throughout my life until I had the time and the need to look over my decisions and evaluate my contribution to this world.”
A life well-lived, Herbert’s character and service are reflected in the giving of his life’s work to his faith and family. As is reflected in his life of faithful service to Christian ministry, Herbert dedicated the entirety of his professional career to serving God and others in church and parachurch organizations, advancing the causes of Christ and the Gospel, and shepherding God’s people, in various capacities across the country. Herbert, likewise, served and nurtured his family through the years, having been married to his best friend and beloved, wife Wanda since December 15, 1977 and lovingly raising a daughter and two sons alongside her. Together, Herbert and Wanda, enjoyed his final years as the doting grandparents to five beautiful grandchildren.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Wanda of 45 years, his children Marlin (wife Melissa), Tennille (husband Cedric), and Marcus (wife Ruth), Mother Marjorie Chenault, Cherl Wade, John Mark Chenault, Sr and, Leonard and George Brisbane , grandchildren: Maloreigh, Marleigh, Maxwell, Mason, Christopher and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
