Richard Floyd Daughtry was born in Mount Sylvan on Dec. 22, 1929, to Floyd and Pauline Daughtry. He showed an early love of people, music and art. Richard attended Freed-Hardeman College in Tennessee for two years. He then transferred to Abilene Christian College where he was active in the A Capella Chorus and men's quartet. He received his BA from ACC and began a 60-year journey as a minister in the Church of Christ. He was honored to baptize Maxine Orr and Bobby Brewer at the age of 19, the first of many baptisms, weddings and funerals he performed.
He married Verna Vaughan Daughtry on June 30, 1952, in Altus, Okla., where he served as youth minister. He was fortunate to have worked with wonderful congregations in Altus, Okla.; Amherst; Vernon; Chickasha, Okla.; Columbus Avenue Church of Christ in Waco; University Avenue Church of Christ in Austin; Manhattan Church of Christ in New York City, N.Y.; and for the last 21 years was senior adult minister at Richland Hills Church of Christ.
Richard was also very involved in missions working through the Campaigns for Christ in Scotland and Australia. While preaching in Waco he also had a radio program (Walk with the Master) for nine years. Later he led groups of travelers to Israel, Italy, Alaska and Spain. While working in Waco he earned his master's in religion at Baylor University and did doctoral work at the University of Texas at Austin.
Richard was a talented artist and was accepted and studied at the prestigious Art Student League in Manhattan. Over the years his paintings were recognized in juried competitions including the National Art for the Parks. His painting was selected as one of the top 100 in the country.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Floyd and Pauline Daughtry; sister, Sandra Peterman; and daughters, Jan and Ann Daughtry.
Survivors: Wife of 58 years, Verna Vaughan Daughtry of Dallas; daughters, Dawn Wylie of Abilene and Debra Bomar and husband, Eric, of Prosper; sister, Peggy Parker of Tyler; grandchildren, Ashley And JC Timmons, Jade and Sterling Wylie, Taylor, Casey and Lexi Bomar; great-grandchild, Penelope Timmons.
