Bob was born on October 27, 1937, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Max and Frieda Dalhausser. A first-generation American, Bob was the son of German immigrants who had come to this country in search of a better life, a gift he honored through the way he lived and served. He attended Union High School, where he was a natural athlete, playing soccer and basketball, and running the high hurdles and competing in the high jump for the track and field team. He went on to attend Seton Hall University, where he played varsity soccer all four years, at halfback and center forward, and served as co-captain of the team his senior year. These were early signs of the competitive spirit and camaraderie that would define his life. Upon graduation, he received a Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.
Bob dedicated twenty years to serving his country, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. An Army Ranger and paratrooper, he completed two combat tours in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 101st Airborne Division, where he served as Provost Marshal for the division. His final assignment was as commander of the Criminal Investigation Division at Fort Polk, Louisiana. His courage and commitment to service were a source of lasting admiration for his family.
It was during his time stationed in Ulm, Germany, that Bob’s life changed forever. There he met the love of his life, Walburga, known to everyone as Wally. The two married in December of 1961, beginning a partnership that would last over six decades.
After retiring from the military, Bob and Wally made their home in Fort Worth, Texas, where they built a full and happy life together. Bob was the kind of man who made every room a little brighter. Whether he was sharing a funny card, trying to land the not-so perfectly timed punchlines, or simply making someone feel welcomed and at ease, Bob had a way of bringing joy to those around him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Wally; his children, Dirk and Diana; his daughters-in-law, Amy and Saundra; and his grandchildren, Alex and Kate, who were a source of tremendous pride and delight. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jacqueline, and his niece and nephews, Heidi, Michael, and Todd. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Frieda, and his brother, Manfred.
Bob lived with purpose, humor, and an open heart. He will be deeply missed and long remembered by all whose lives he touched.
