Rory Scott Hinchliffe was born on January 19, 1962 to Curt Charles Hinchliffe and Mary Jo Bounds Hinchliffe in Stamford, Texas. He was diagnosed as mentally retarded at an early age, a diagnosis that was later changed to Non-verbal Severe Autism. The only word he ever spoke when he was kid was “Odie”. This became his nickname and that is what everyone called him from then on.
Odie spent most of his life in state hospitals and state schools. He was in Dallas Hospital, Austin State School, Denton State School, Fort Worth State School, and back to Denton State Supported Living Center for the last 25 years of his life.
Orange is for Odie. Those that knew him will understand this. He LOVED orange sodas no matter what brand. Fanta, Sunkist, and Hansen’s orange sodas were his favorites. The staff at the school tried to give him diet soda, but Odie knew the difference and would not drink it. The staff at the school made sure to always have orange soda in the some of the soda machines because of him.
Odie was a little guy with great physical strength and a strong spirit as well. He was so strong that it surprised most people, especially the nurses in the hospital.
Odie is preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his big brother Curt C. Hinchliffe, Jr. and his wife Esther, his little sister Debbie Hinchliffe Landrum and her husband Dewey, and his baby sister Lisa G. Hinchliffe ; half-sisters Carol Collins and Cathy Hinchliffe; nephew, Chase Hinchliffe, and two nieces, Jennifer Landrum Batson and Stephanie Landrum Krauskopf, and three great nieces Hannah Batson, Avery Krauskopf, and Corinne Krauskopf.
Odie will be laid to rest with his mother and his father’s ashes. He will finally be at peace and no longer suffering.
