Ted was truly an American hero and earned many distinguished Medals while serving our country that speaks to his heroism and amazing character including the Bronze Star with Valor for heroic achievement in a combat zone and 3 Purple Hearts for his injuries in combat.
Once Ted settled in his career after the Korean War, he worked for a little over 40 years before retiring in the Telecommunications business for Bell Telephone and GTE Phone Co. Ted also devoted 30+ years to serving the Commemorative Air Force. He had a passion for keeping WWII airplanes flying and generously gave his time, efforts and financial support to keeping these birds in the air. He toured for many years with the last known flying “Helldiver” SB2C WWII airplane and loved the opportunity to show her off to the next generation with hands on wing walks. Ted enjoyed many of his retired days spending time his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling with his wife Sharon.
If I were to try and describe this man, it would take a while because he’s complicated! He’s rough on the exterior but a big softy under the shell. Clearly, by his life we know he was a fighter and a survivor that didn’t even know what it was to give up or quit. He still believed in and represented things like chivalry, honesty, trustworthiness, faithfulness, perseverance, loyalty and patience. He loved his family and would do just about anything for them when asked. He was always good for a laugh and a good time. He was happy when he was able to work hard all day then relax with a Budweiser. What he gave in this life was himself. His time, his efforts, his laughter and his love by actions. We couldn’t have asked for more because he gave all he had until the very end.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Short; children, Ricky Short, Sherry Short Paxton and Teresa Moore; grandchildren, Luke Short, Shayla Sanchez, Ashlie Pollard and Katelyn Paxton; 3 great grandchildren and sister, Jeanne Ballard. Preceded in death by son, Steven Short and brother, Sam Short.
Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Shannon Rufe Snow Chapel, 6100 Rufe Snow Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76148.
