Born March 27, 1924, to the Rev. Adam and Maggie McDaniel in York County, S.C., she was the first of five siblings and considered the jewel among the many treasured children.
Born to a Baptist minister father and educator mother, Thelma sought her own higher education obtaining her undergraduate and master's degrees in library science. The first black librarian in Fredericksburg, she and her husband, Paul Jr., a veterinarian, continued the long presence of the Phillips family in the Texas Hill Country. Her accomplishments within the the community, state and nation as a librarian exemplified her desire to touch the lives of people across race, gender and economic and political borders.
Her relocation to Fort Worth in 1973 provided a new opportunity within the Arlington Public Library system as associate director of Arlington public libraries and then as head of volunteer services. After retiring from the city of Arlington in 1993, she continued her service in her church community.
All who crossed her path felt her gentle spirit and she never failed to extend her hand in compassion to those in need. Those hands now are still but their touch forever remembered. We celebrate your "Gettin' Up" and know that God has gained another angel in His heavenly choir. We honor you for your endless love.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Paul Phillips Jr., and a daughter, Janet, who passed away in May 2009.
Arrangements under the direction of Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel & Cemetery, Fort Worth, TX.
